Not a pig farmer myself but nearby has b&b pigs ,they scream all day long .Infact all night , sleep is something that is now lacking in this household.Never hear other pigs in the area. When I say scream I mean scream like they are been murdered.surely something is not right.

I know we just had some mixed and screaming and fighting but there not mine this time as your in Yorkshire and won’t hear mine [emoji12]

I wouldn’t hear yours for the racket of these.Surely it’s animal welfare to keep boars and gilts separate if they fight and stress like this. You Wouldn‘t put bulls and heifers together for the same reason.Surely the famous Red Tractor has rules

We split sex them for this very reason.
The boars are fantastically quiet, and I feel very guilty when we send them.
Same here, except for the feeling guilty bit. For me, the appeal of pigs diminishes from about week 3! To the OP, I would agree that it is most likely a time of year thing, mixed sex groups and the sap is rising!

Pigs will scream at the slightest upset as if they are "being murdered". However for them to constantly scream is not right. Ours are quiet all night and for most of the day.
have you had a word with the farmer, and if that gives no answers then the B&B company?

An old lad down the valley from me,told me, quite confidently, that he could hear when we were killing pigs. He said he could hear much squealing, then a big bang, then it went quiet. I told him, equally confidently, that he was mistaken and that I would pick him up later that afternoon, so he could see for himself. I have my pigs in same sex groups of about twenty, with indoor sleeping accommodation and an outdoor feeding yard. I shut them inside the shed whilst putting the feed in the yard, this creates much excitement, ( the squealing ), i then release them and they burst the gate open, with much force and it hits the front of the shed (the bang) , then it all goes quiet as they scoff the grub :D . Just goes to show how it is easy for people to jump to the wrong conclusion!

pigs fight, hell of a racket, used to have to get back, pdq, and pull the victim out, why, no idea, big pens, out door run, and 'toys'. If you didn't pull the victim out, they would kill them. Thankfully not a routine thing, just occasional.

I remember doing some building work for a neighbour when I left college. I had a galvanised bucket to top up the cement mixer and if his pigs heard the bucket handle rattle they’d squeal for ages. They had a right old menagerie there all wandering about as you were trying to get on with the job. Geese would tear the cement bags open. One morning there was much consternation because they found a goose head first in a bucket of water drowned, with its legs in the air. I think they thought I’d done it deliberately but it must have fallen in head first getting a drink.

we had a batch of trial genetics that wouldnt shut up. the best pigs we ever have had, next to no animals needed jabbing, best ever growth rate for the company, no tail biting. Almost the perfect pig, just they wouldnt shut up, i would go and give them extra straw in the middle of the night to shut them up for a bit. All they were doing was sitting on each other, drove me bonkers the noise they made. these were split sexed pigs.

All i would say is, the farmer is probably very aware of it and is not happy about it himself, and is driving him mad with it.
if its the first time you have noticed them, its probably some trial genetics.

i know its hard, but to be honest having the council giving him grief over it is probably the last thing they need, and also there is very little he can do!
