Planning on buying a floor standing pillar drill whats your views, want a robust drill with the least robust price tag . Have had a Sealy in the past, did the job but wasnt the most accurate.

Can't go far wrong with Fobco. Bit pricey, but you'll never buy again. Very well made.
Again depends on requirements? If only needed for the DIY'er or hobbyist, then this would be overkill

I jave a mag drill on a pillar that i adapted.
It works but has limitations , throwt capacity ect.
Now also have a meddings and elliot....

Better off looking for an older pillar drill in good condition than a new Chinese one.

Fobco (as already mentioned) / Startrite / Kerry / Meddings / Q&S . Any of that lot will see you right.

Fobco drill here old man bought it many years ago second hand still going strong would not like to be without it

As has been previously suggested, the better value is in the older "branded" kit. Gear driven and not belt is a must if you're wanting to go above 1/2" dia. Morse taper essential and power feed is most definitely desirable to say the least.

Look on ebay and facebook market place, it's surprising what turns up there.

On the subject of using Mag drills as bench drills, you can get an adapter that will allow you to run the cutters in the pillar drill- something of a game changer when getting to the larger holes.

Annular cutters are a godsend for large diameter holes. As long as feed and speed are right and you've rigged the machine for coolant they last for ages as well.

Gear driven and not belt is a must if you're wanting to go above 1/2" dia.

my drill is belt driven and ive used 51mm broaches no trouble at all. a fair bit of the old heavy duty kit is belt driven.

Fair comment I'm sure. My experience of the belt driven machines has been along the SIP/ Sealey brands and the belts tended to slip if you looked at them in fairness!

One near here weighs around 2.5 ton ,and a slightly smaller one ,going scrap ,
big one £450 working ,3 phase , be an age when noah was about

Adjustable stand and a good quality mag drill. You wont look back.
