Pin outs novatel

As robt suggested have you simply tried swapping round the Rx & Tx wires on RS232 plug?

This shows the transmitting port (Tx) from the deutsch plug connected to the transmitting port (Tx) on the NovAtel, when usually the transmitting port (Tx) is connected to the receiving port (Rx) and vice versa

Rs232 Tx (out)- com1 RxD (in)
Rs232 Rx (in) - com1 TxD (out)
Ordinarily you’d be correct with Tx goes to Rx and vice versus if cabling from receiver to screen. However in this case the OP was making an adapter cable to swap the 372 receiver with a Novatel receiver. Therefore in his wiring convention Tx should by rights go to Tx and Rx should go to Rx (unless of course Trimble and NovAtel have different data direction conventions for a Tx pin for example).

In any event a quick swap of the Tx and Rx was tried I believe but to no avail. It’s more than likely a baud rate mismatch - but this requires a bit of laptop work with some terminal software to reprogram the NovAtel baud rates.

Yes I’ve tried this a few times now, sadly no success, it looks very much like it’s a baud rate thing. I’ve been told how to change the baud on the NovAtel but until I’ve figured out how to change the baud rate on the Arag sprayer screen I’ve not done it yet as I don’t want to keep changing baud rates.

Check with your Arag dealer, but looks like the baud rate on the Delta 80 is fixed at 57,600 bps....see page 26. Doubtless if the AgStar was last connected to the Delta 80 screen then that's what it is putting out and why its not talking to the AFS screen which is expecting to connect at 38,400 bps

http://househamsprayers.co.uk/media/content/files/Delta 80 Manual.pdf

So if moving the AgStar receiver between the AFS screen and the Delta 80 you would have to change the baud rate manually on the receiver each time you swapped it over.

Thanks, yes I was going to speak to Arag at lamma next week, I’ve tried talking ‘Arag’ with Househam before and they don’t seem that clued up on it,
From what you’ve found though it looks very much like I’ll have to manually change the NovAtel if I want to use it on the tractor.

At what accuracy do you plan to use the receiver? Having seen the photo above and the A100 receiver thought it should not cost much to have a second receiver if it runs at EGNOS only. We have a redundant A100 and I assume there are plenty available and cheap, any of the three?

Just EGNOS, my thought process has been, I’m putting a steering motor in the sprayer, this is a CNH product and will run off my 372 with RTK, while the 372 is on the sprayer the NovAtel won’t be doing anything and I’d like to stick it on the tractor so that can still do basic steering, cultivation etc, I’ll put the 372 back on for drilling. I’d most likely not need the NovAtel back on the sprayer after this is all up and running but would be nice as a fall back, a “just in case”.

Once you know what your comms port settings are from the 700 screen, you will need to match them on the NovAtel receiver.

Not sure what you previously had the NovAtel receiver connected to, but to otherwise check and/or set the serial port speeds etc you’ll need to physically connect the NovAtel to a laptop (have you got a comms/power cable and USB to serial adapter for the laptop like the picture) and use something like the NovAtel Connect GUI software to check and change the port settings. See section 3.2 in the User Manual. You could use a bog standard terminal program on the laptop to connect to the receiver too and issue text direct commands from the terminal program rather than the GUI program.

If you’ve never done this before, the first time connection maybe a little tricky unless again you know what comms speed the receiver port is set to to talk to the USB-serial adapter on the laptop. But usually you just keep changing the port speed on the serial adaptor on the laptop until it connects. Chicken and egg eh!

The only other way is if the NovAtel has Bluetooth built in and you connect it to your laptop that way instead of via cable.

As I feared, I maybe out of my depth. I’ve got the usb/rs232 and breakout bits suggested, I’ve power to the receiver, power light is on and orange light above it is flashing. I’ve got the NovAtel support page up, I wasn’t sure which to download, started with the windows USB driver, I can’t get anything to open the USB, trouble is I don’t know what to expect to open. The sprayer screen worked off the 372 receiver set at 57600 baud rate, so I’m guessing that’s what it set to now.

Ok first thing you need to do is get your USB to RS232 cable working on your laptop. They usually should get recognised by Windows and the correct driver for it gets loaded automatically. Occasionally you may need to load the driver manually either from supplied cd/dvd/usb stick or website of the usb-232 cable maker.

Once successfully loaded you should see the cable as a new COM port in your computers settings. If you disconnect the cable and make a note of what COM ports you have, then reconnect the cable, wait a few seconds and the ‘new’ COM port should appear, with luck.

Won’t be near a laptop until this evening. I can have a look for you then and perhaps help you through it.

Is this on the right path?

Check your addressing the correct COM port. My RS232 converter is usually set to something like COM 5 or 7 or something similar. You then need to make sure the COM port baud rate etc matches the NovAtel port.

See generic tutorial something like this...

What COM port is your adapter assigning?

Sorry, I don’t know how to tell.

Ah, I’ve been on that page, sorry I’m not a regular computer user, it was set on com3 but in the manual link you sent me I saw it said about being set to com1, which I changed it to, it then came up with that page I sent pic of. I changed it to com5 before you sent that last video and I’ve now lost that page. Looking for it now

No worries. The COM port number windows assigns can be a bit random. You can change the number it assigns, but for now you just need to know what number COM port it is.

Then in the NovAtel connect software you should tell it to open that particular COM port.

I’ve got it set to com1 again and this is what happens after it try’s to connect

Try setting to 57,600 bps baud rate there instead of auto.

Alternatively you might need to manually change the baud rate on the converter - using Windows device manager (see video in post 54). You right click on the COM port as listed there and on the menu select “properties”. From there a dialog box should pop up and you choose the “port setup” tab, the baud rates for the adapter can be changed there.

Also check your Tx and Rx wiring from the breakout to the NovAtel is correct. Swap Tx and Rx over to check too.

I’ve tried the 57600 already, but I’ll do the other suggestions now, if the pop up window is the one I’m thinking of, it’s set at 9600 at the moment
