Placed fert.

Having had several discussion s regarding solid fert placement at drilling a fert rep tells us that there is no difference between broadcast on top fert over placed of the same analysis.
does anyone know of any work or have any experience of this sort of thing at all.
Any opinions welcome .

Why then do so many North American planter / airseeder / drill manufactures make so much effort at double shoot seed / fert & the precise placement of the fert ?
I think you would find most North American & Australian growers would tell you that the placement of “starter” / “pop up” or trace element fertilisers was pretty crucial . . .
We would always place DAP / MAP type ferts or liquids down the spout with the seed

Continental soils are likely to be drier at planting so placed fertiliser is available sooner. I'd say for UK use it depends on what crop & conditions at drilling. For osr in August or spring crops in a dry spring placed fertiliser is a good idea. For wheat sown in September it's less important and illegal for autumn N in a NVZ unless with written advice from a FACTS qualified adviser. If your soil indices of P and K are good then top dressing is fine in this case.

What are you thinking of @juke ? Adding a front hopper to your Claydon?

teagasc oak park, did some research on it, and showed that there a major advantage to putting P&k beside the seed,

Certainly where P and K indices are low. ADAS did something similar over here. It seemed to fall out of fashion in Southern England as big cultivator drills took over on large areas. P helps with root development. Healthy soils with good reserves show lower responses but you need regular rainfall to wash top dressed products down.

just general conversations about the future and if multi hopper drills are worth the extra money.

Ive been looking at this for the Claydon’s replacement too. Flexibility is key - you’d want an easy way of being able to make use of the fert hopper for extra seed capacity. The big trailed twin hopper Claydons have a removable internal panel so both hoppers can run seed. The Horsch Avatar didn’t but it would be easy enough to cut one out.

All Australian & North American air seeder bins, the multiple ( sometimes 3 or more ) bins can all take the same product & put it all down the same spout, or all different products going down different spouts - it just depends what you want to do & how you plumb the airstream . . .
Dont Euro bins have that flexibility ?

Map/dap back in the day down the spot. Not allowed autumn N on cereals in scottish nova at all but can lash on digestate and any other manure with high available n until the end of September no bother.

Clear liquid solution is best as a starter, P is soluble so therefor more available, also easy to place outlets whereever needed and pipe from a front tank etc. Alot lower rates needed than with the likes of DAP

I don’t think you would need to cut the Avatar about because it all goes down the same pipe

Especially when you gave high p soil test, then just a wee bit would do the job. Unfortunately you can't get p without n as a liquid.

I was thinking of making the full use of the hopper capacity. The demo Avatar I had ran 2 hoppers split 60/40 so I'd have to calibrate them 60/40 if wanting a full hopper of one product.

Work I've seen shows responses to starter P even with high P indices. Not much product needed so I don't see a problem unless you're sowing a crop that can't have seedbed N...

Actually you don’t, you can select 2x seed in the settings and then choose 50/50 or 60/40 split and it will do it automatically when you calibrate, but I only bother if I’m doing VR otherwise I just calibrate each bin for full rate and switch bins when they get low. (y)
