Hello,
I have been sorting through obtaining a CPH number, but I wanted to ask what type of permission do I need for animal shelters (for pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys and goats...not all the the same time though!).
Is it more difficult to obtain because our property is listed?
I'd also like to put up a storage area to put equipment that's required to tend to the animals.
All advice appreciated. Thanks.

If there is a wall, fence or hedge round the listed building which separates it from the rest then the limit of the listing is the wall etc, council might tell you differently but they would be wrong. We fought a long and expensive battle against Wiltshire council and were proved right.

There is a high hedgerow and gate seperating the house (the listed bit) gardens from the field where we would be keeping the livestock and constructing the animal housing etc.
Thank you for the info though, I will keep it in mind.

If it is outside the curtilage of the listed building, and it sounds like it is in this case then listed building consent will not be required but you will still need to provide a Heritage Statement with the planning application to identify any impact to the setting of the listed building.
Thank you for that guidance. Much appreciated - so very confusing!!

Any development within the vicinity of a listed building will need a heritage statement, but only development within or to the curtilage of a listed building requires listed building consent.

Do you know if your building would require Planning Permission or just Prior Approval? If it is only Prior Approval then the heritage statement may not be required.

I don't know is the honest answer, I have checked the grade 2 listing which is for being in a historical mining area and World Heritage Site...house dates from 15-16th C (although it was a barn until 1995). I don't think the previous owners farmed the area although we are surrounded by farms/sheep/equine etc. I checked the council planning for this house which had previous update work undertaken and it involved a Conservation Officer from the Historic Environment team....all very confusing!!

Best way to devalue your listed building is to put modern buildings close to it. Council will try and keep new build as close as possible to existing building but outside the listed building curtiledge. After a planning appeal the inspector agreed with me that the large barn I wanted was best placed 100 mtrs away behind a wood not visible from the grade 2 listed building.
