planted crop condition

I had a day's driving instruction across Glos, Warks, Leics, Oxon & Rutland on Tuesday. I don't think I've ever seen so few acres of winter cereals. Lots of fields with evidence of machinery abuse and seed slotted in. Quite a few good looking osr crops though, but a distinct correlation between these and a pile of steaming FYM nearby.

All different stages around here, from some decent early sown to quite a bit just planted which won’t be seen until mid January at the earliest .

Their report does not correlate to crops round this way, more like 60-70 unplanted on cereals, there are however some good looking crops of OSR that were planted very early. Some were drilling WW last week along with ploughing beans down.
A few I have spoken with have put their drills away till Spring but I also know someone who has drilled 5000 acres up on the Marlborough downs with numerous ploughs/combi drills but then it's downland.

train Lichfield to London last week - think I only saw 1 field recognizable as OSR the entire route

bit of wheat but mostly looking poor and soggy - mostly stubbles, root and maize fields that look like the Somme and a quadtrac pulling a trailer alongside a half stuck forager in a maize crop

How these numbers get collected I have no idea - they probably cost fortunes of our levy cash to produce employ numerous people and are usually miles out, if people want to know what farmers have planted and how it's asking why not just ask here and save fortunes !!

what use are these numbers to us as farmers anyway? surely the info is more useful to traders merchants etc .......... yet we pay for it ??

I would say very optimistic for round here, the wolds look better but they are on a chalk sponge.

It’s now the wettest autumn/start to winter since the 90’s now.

I wouldn't say it's optimistic at all, to be fair. You can read it as (for WW) around two thirds unplanted/not up, poor or very poor. That sounds dire enough.

Just for interest I do a journey through the vale of York fairly regularly from the farm. I thought today I would count for the first 10 miles the total number of fields of osr and cereals I can see as drilled/established from the road. ( covers all establishment methods as I can see) and in that 10miles there were 13 fields of osr and cereals I could see and count as drilled.

Round here we have well surpassed 2012 for total autumn rainfall. Still below 2000 though; it's nearly 20 years ago but can't think planting achieved was as bad as this time. Must have been doing something then to make us more resilient.

Early drilling was all the rage, just let Atlantis sort it out all your weeds in the spring. Along with smaller lighter kit and more of it along with more boots on the ground. That would be my guess for the difference from now to then.

EDIT. Actually just looked up and Atlantis didn't come on the scene until 2003.

We had 3 dry weeks in October 2000 that allowed me to do all my drilling. The rest of the time it was awful. We had Avadex, Lexus, Hawk, Treflan and IPU back then.
