If drilling on a wide row system, lest say OSR at 20" spacing, and you would normally be aiming for 40 plants /m2 established . should you adjust you seed rate to account for the wider row widths ?

surely a broadcast 40 plants/m2 is going to give a different result to a wide row drilled 40 plants ??

Clive,

Agrovista have done some interesting work on optimum plants per m row in relation to row width on OSR, have a look at their growrop gold stuff, but a lot of their data backs up that as you increase row width without adjusting the seed rate accordingly then the plants competed with each other as they became bunched.

I'll have a look back through the notes, but on 50 cm it was around 35 seeds/m row seemed to be coming out consistently one year. The higher the no of seeds the lower the establishment as well, but I'll see if I can dif it out.

phillip marr talks a lot about plants per m run.

but in all honesty im not sure its so critical. plants are clever and will branch where they have to even if they are too close in the row...

Thing about rape seeds in the row. Is that first one to germinate throws out a chemical which stops/suppreses others from germinating. Still not a fan of wide rows or evn rows at all.
