You have to remember that for a lot of these stolen items there is an equally liable recipient fuelling the market. Ag equipment will only be used in general by farmers apart from the atm thefts. We are our own worst enemies when a bargain is to be had. You see it in all walks of life not just Agriculture.

I have to disagree with that I Dont know anyone anymore with an old quad I always ask police or anyone where they go I believe itS abroad, I certainly don’t know any farmer who would ‘buy one cheap’ Maybe 20 years ago but not now, same with all gps stuff off tractors I believe that’s Eastern Europe.

I don’t know where the stolen goods are going but ag equipment will be used in agriculture somewhere. It wasn’t that long ago on here that there was an issue with second hand control boxes off various machines offered for sale on a website by a single vendor. Those were planned to be resold into the Uk market. Neighbouring farm had a grain lorry which turned up for a load of cereal back in the 1990s. The farmer happened to look in before loading to discover several quad bikes waiting to be hidden by the grain. That load was destined for Wales or Ireland. I can’t remember which now.

Was told similar tale about lorry been filled at farm way by auger and some one had looked in back of it. Few quads sat in bottom, police were informed, man was led to believe quite common. Lorry destination Ireland, police said go in storage across there. Then seriel number s only on police data base for several months. So quads then often come back and sold second hand.

Mate got his sheep gear stolen found it in a collective sale over the west. Even told the police who stole it (he was tipped off) even where the scumbag lived. Nothing came of it they weren't bothered. At least he got 90% of his stuff back thanks to the auctioneer

I started selling to farmers in 2002 and by 2003 my whole world view of farmers as being fine upstanding citizens and paragons of honesty and integrity had been blown to smithereens. I suddenly 'grew up' rather cruelly. OK, there are pikey thieving scum around but I'm afraid there are plenty of dishonest and thieving scum farmers around also, which might make some readers uncomfortable.

As in any society, the vast majority of people are perfectly fine and nice honest folk, but around 20% are a bit dodgy but OK, half of those [1 in 10] are dishonest in some circumstances and 1% to 2% are pure evil. I've said this many times in the past but it is worth repeating in this context where stolen farm goods are often stolen by other farmers and other stolen goods are knowingly bought by some farmers that have no moral compass.

Self employed gardeners and foresters may not be registered. It gives them a competitive advantage when dealing with householders and so on.
