Ploughing 14" furrow suitable tyre size

I have a KV LD85 four furrow plough set with 14" furrows. I can hire a neighbours tractor on 520 / 70R38 rear tyres. They are set at 51" inside wall to wall.
Is the tyre too wide for a 14" furrow? They look a bit wide to me for making a good job of matching up the bouts.

Which are the most widely used of the two bodies no.8 or 28 as I'm sure I have the standard ones supplied at the time?
Would it be best to open the plough out to 16"?

You’re not listening:ROFLMAO: the working width has NOTHING to do with how wide a furrow bottom you leave, that’s all down to the body and how far it throws the soil. Ploughing at 18 inch will leave exactly the same size furrow bottom as ploughing at 12 inch.

I agree totally with this theory but in practice my hyd vari width plough leaves a much wider furrow bottom at 20 inch compared to 12. Think the problem is with narrow furrow widths there is not much distance to throw the soil cause the next furrow is very close. Ps I'm not an expert, this is just what i find with my plough. I think 520s will be fine whatever boards your using, it's when your trying to work with 650's or bigger that things get tricky

This is 100 percent impossible as no matter if you're at 20 or 12 the share is still the same length probably 16 inch and the moulds are still the same length and shape so the size of the hole does NOT and cannot change only the amount of soil being turned over changes :banghead: :banghead: :banghead::banghead::banghead: I'm no ploughing expert either but I do plough 1000 acres a year with a hydraulic vari width so it's something I use on a regular basis

620 rear 540 front tyres with a no 28 .

Your plough will either be an 8 9 or 28 body so all will be fine with a 520 tyre .

Second picture. The width from the furrow wall to the lowest point of the board never changes no matter what width you're ploughing at so moving it to 16 inches won't make a blind bit of difference. A pic of the plough boards and I'll probably can tell you what you have

Just put these on the back furrow will open up back furrow and let tyre fit in better works a treat with wide tyres

You might have to adjust your front furrow width if you run one of those as it’ll move your tractor and plough a couple of inches further away from last pass. We found it didn’t match up as well when we tried wideners unless we jiggled with front furrow width, hardly noticeable though.

520 is the same width as 20.8. Whether that is too wide depends on the type of body fitted to the plough not the furrow width. It is just right for the Overum XL body and probably for the equivalent long throw Kv and other brand's bodies. If they are more traditional bodies then 520 is likely too wide but 18.4, which is 460/85R38 might fit well. These and 520/70R38 fit on the same rims and are interchangeable.

A 28 has got a very square point at the rail end the 8 and 9 has a more rounded end
