We have a newish kv lo I know it will get slated shortly but my point is that it has newer slightly longer legs and maize skimmers which improve over previous.
Basically which ever make you look at i would consider leg spacings and length and any pinch points through the plough I.e past depth wheel etc.

do you get many blockages, particularly on the skimmers in chopped straw?

If you're ploughing in a lot of chopped straw then the wider the leg spacing the better. We've an EG85 6fur kv and to be fair it's quite good, come to a heavy bit of straw, ie the combine had to reverse and left a double layer it can at times choke, if you had say an EG100, you'd sail through it. That'll go for any plough.

Yes above I don't get many blockages now occasionally when picking up ends but some of the land isn't very good. But by far the best plough so far which is down to the clearance. As above if you went for 100cm clearance it would be really good. We nearly did but on a seven furrow fully mounted the extra distance between each leg makes it really long! If you are 5-6 furrow on a decent tractor I would go for as much as possible

Are you ploughing r just to get rid of straw take skimmers off and black it over that way you will have straw all way through furrow profile not a thick mat in furrow bottom Know some who do it like this because of above reason soon disappears when worked.

We used to ,especially if ploughing in winter beans as it kept the furrows open ,let more air in then just knock it down

KV ES 85 5 fur Vari width but i keep it at 16" all the time now.
Ploughs 18" OSR Stubble in thats also been chopped & covered in Cattle Muck No probs.
Keep the Skimmers working aswell.
100cm spacing would be better but it just adds more weight & length & cost.

You can get longer point to point and larger underbeam clearances along with big manure skimmers. All this helps. Many German made ploughs are spec's like this due to maize stubble ploughing! There is nothing new about this. Take a look at our new Kongskikde (by Overum) range. We have a broad cross section on display at Cereals this year including long clearance and big skimmers!
