Vet advised this wasn't needed like the other diseases such as BVD a PI you obviously have to cull they just advised do not keep heifers back out of this cow and as long as everything vaccinated it wont be a problem?

interesting to see your feedback as said cow has started getting later calving and has a few buddys that are getting later! so it wouldn't be much problem if there best gone!

edit just to clarify I don't keep any of my own heifers for replacements any way
Maybe if the cows are vaccinated they’ll be ok but as IBR carriers they’ll shed the virus amongst your calves when the cows become stresssed for any reason hence why your calves can become ill if you’re not vaccinating them

good point never really thought of them shedding it to calves which I suppose is obvious but apparently not to me!
I thought IBR was more of a pregnancy problem but am hearing of plenty finishing units that vaccinate all cattle going in?

Definitely not a pregnancy virus it affects all cattle....plenty of finishers get it as they’re mixing cattle from all over and movement stress sets it off

Did you not put a pic on here with bales of straw in clouds of dust and smoke...
[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]aaaah yes that was I!

Those bales never went near the calves tho and got used for the older cows!

Calves are bedded up to there belly in good dry winter barley straw that we got baled and stacked inside before the horrid weather hit..[emoji56][emoji56]

Silent pneumonia is the worst thing to happen in a shed full of cattle. Once lost 6 bought in stores in a week before we could get it under control. Dreaded going out in morning to shed. Cattle went from looking healthy to streams of mucus in 3 hours.
Sad to say but it's a long haul out of a bad outbreak

About 20+yr ago we were hit bad with pneumonia. Never vaccinated before that what ever we did just didn't seem to work , weather probably worst factor that year. We lost 15 that autumn. More following summer with damaged lungs. Just as some here say you just can't bare to go into the shed! Following year my brother and myself wanted to vaccinate but dad said not just a one of! We were hit again but not so bad. Lots of vet visits again! Since then we've always vaccinated. Some years we jag a few some years next to nothing. This week while I've been away brother has jagged everything with alamycin weather is rubbish! They were all snotty and flat in the sides. He's said big big difference following day.

It’s just real bad weather for it! Not quite the same, but we will have lost about 50 lambs across the farms in the last week to pneumonia, but all vaccinated animals!
Do you give an Ovivac booster in the autumn? I lost a few lambs at this time a couple of years ago and April born lambs get a top up in October now. Still lost one a couple of days after, though..

Hope the treatment works out well on all the rest for you @bruce9001.
Got 90 that were weaned a fortnight ago in one shed and been thinking this colder spell the past 7-10 days would be a good thing for lessening pneumonia risk.
Will be looking at them even more closely in the morning after reading this:(

Had terrible few days with Pneumonia!

We have never vaccinated as only ever had a few cases a year of pneumonia!

This year we have 160 calves!
We weaned them last week and got them all clipped and gave a pour on, also de-horned the few that needed done!

Come friday just passed had to jag 2 for pneumonia but they werent that bad and have responded well, same again on saturday and those 2 are fine!

On sunday had 2 that were really bad amd gave both Draxxin and Metacam, yesterday morning one was lying dead!
Had about 5 new ones showing signs so ran them thru race and jagged!
At night went into shed and found another one dead that before hadnt shown signs (that i had noticed)

This morning we pulled out 38 that were showing signs from slightly snotty noses right thru to ones panting heavily etc!

Decided time to call vet out!
Started going through them and even the ones that looked ok gad temperatures around 40celcius!

We done everything that had 40+ temp with draxxin and metacam and anyrhing from 39 - 40 with Hexasol!

Sent 2 deads for PM so hopefully find the virus cause so can vaccinate next year for the proper strain!

Sometimes the job makes you almost feel like giving up [emoji22][emoji22][emoji22]

Oh sh!t! I've just weaned 80 and put them in the shed, normally get one or two snotty noses, you've got me worried now
