Politicians that have gone up in your estimation

Which politician has ever gone up in your estimation for something they said or did?

For example, John Prescott went up in mine when he punched the mullet who egged him.
Amazing speed of punch and great left jab

Still don’t like the man much though ...

The ones that spring to mind are all dead, are now traduced by many people, and are admired by me only because I took the time to study their histories and read up on them properly; e.g. Michael Collins and Enoch Powell.

Of those 'undead', probably Dennis Skinner, Jacob Rees-Mogg, both have been entirely consistent politically - not a great fan of either but I respect them for not being vote-chasers.

FDR, Franklin D Roosevelt, must go down as one of the greatest politicians and leaders of all time. Overcame huge personal restrictions, to lead USA out of the Great Depression. Led it into and through WW2. Led it to super power status. Led the global Polio elimination strategy.
I did my A level thesis on FDR , All down to Woodrow Wilson imo , but hey ho

Not actually a politician, more a political campaigner, but Peter Tatchell has shown that his principles extend beyond just being a campaigner for gay rights - he showed some real physical courage when he twice tried to perform a citizens arrest on Mugabe for his human rights abuses, once in London and again in Brussels. He has also not been afraid to call out Islamic leaders on their homophobic attitudes (again which takes some stones these days), and has also stood up for free speech rights, even for people he fundamentally disagrees with.

There's lots (maybe most) of his politics I disagree with, but he has principles, and sticks to them even when they potentially work against his political aims, or result in him holding public opinions that many avoid for fear of being seen to be politically incorrect - he isn't just a one eyed political hypocrite as so many are today, who are prepared to argue on either side of a principle at different times when it suits their aims.

Roy Hattersley, for an interview where he expressed the view that, despite the constant deluge of bad news, society is constantly striving to make today better than yesterday and is, on the whole, succeeding. It was an observation that was made above party politics, and enhanced my view of him.

Blew it when he didn’t appear on Have I Got News For You and they replaced him with a tub of lard

Paddy Ashdown. Whilst I don’t support his political views I did admire the way he handled the press after caught shaging his secretary, instead of the usual deny, deny, deny, he admitted his indiscretion and within a couple of days the newspapers that were carrying the “story” were wrapping chips.
