Pollen Beetles 2019

Walking through OSR Sunday and spotted these on the more advanced plants. Shall be spraying on Friday. Only a month early. Another observation is that the OSR won’t be as tall as other years if it’s already on bud. Only up to the top of your boot. How’s everyone else’s?

Seriously ! People still spray for these things ?

They were not a problem 2018,2017,2016,2015,2014,2013.......... Need I go on ? So no idea why would they be a problem this year ?

Destroying benificials is why CSFB and slugs are an issue and making osr unviable for some and why you feel you “need” seed dressings like deter etc and multiple Bydv sprays to be able to grow wheat

Step away from the insecticide bottle please ! And spend the time your not driving the sprayer googling and reading about IPM

Really the top buds are a really high percentage of yield. Look at these two pics. It’s not going to get any better.
Profit going quick. And there will be a continuous supply coming through day by day.

Your not up to threshold yet so done panic, at one of the osr breeders open days last year they told us that osr produces about 4 times as many flowers than are needed to produce yield so you can loose alot and not worry and once the crop starts flowering they'll be doing a wonderful job of pollinating the remaining flower.

Woooo flower power

in rough terms:
for an average plant population of 40 plants:

  • Each plant has 3000-4000 flower primordia

  • 5-20% turn into fertile flower (optimum at about 300 flowers per plant)

  • 40-60% of the flowers turn into pod with seeds

  • There is a very high variation due to environment, but there is also a high potential to compensate

As Clive so eloquently said, these aren't really a problem in the winter crop. In theory any backward areas of the field will be held back by a heavy infestation, but the difference made to such low potential areas by an expensive insecticide is unlikely to be cost-effective. Any decent areas of crop can take any number of these without detriment.

Not really, I'll reach for the Chem can no hesitation IF it's needed but the over use of Chems for the last 30-40 years has resulted in the mess were in now. If previous generations had thought a bit more about IPM/IFM our job now would be much more straight forward.

They better keep banning them then to keep them from your reach

Same here, hoping by the time the weather lets me get the sprayer out, it will have started to chuck flowers out and they won’t be an issue. I like it when the weather takes decisions like this out of my hands !!

To be honest it’s getting close to knocking rape on the head as a break crop now, shame but can’t see it’s got much of a future now
