Pond or lake construction

If your digging close to boundary, close to watercourses, near banks/rights of way (LA), canals etc it is classed as engineering works. I imagine the council wont be interested if its in the middle of agricultural land and wont affect others. But for sure you need to ensure you check this out. We have built and deep pond for water storage to feed our lower fields however has had leaks even after endless imports of clay. Brought in pigs but dont think thats making a big impact.

The best place to dig a pond is where the water lies after a storm. If you are new to your property ask locals what the ground is like and watch what the rain does. Half my rainwater runs into our pond, that I dug, and the other half goes into the ditch system. The old fashioned way was to run a herd of cattle\oxen in the dip you dug for the clay that you would use for the walls of your house having added binding materials like hay/straw & animal hairs. This eventually became a useful water gathering area........

Of course in Wales you must not dig a pond in a wet area, you know the sort ---that hollow in the clay or peaty field full of rushes and buttercups where water always lays:).

To dig it there would be damaging habitat and be a breach of cross compliance.:confused::confused:

Instead you must dig it in your best most productive land, where it is devoid of anything worthwhile and is not natural in any way :eek::eek::banghead:

A little story re 'experts';
I paid for a VERY expensive bat survey when I was applying for permission to renovate my Victorian smallholding. The specialist arrived in a new disco with an expensive number plate. We paid for him to tell us that there were no bats living on the place, I knew this as I had an electronic bat detector and had been enjoying summer evenings using it. I just didn't posess the correct qualifications to put my observations into writing...:whistle:
We have a regular fly-bys and a hunting, breeding pair of barn owls nesting in a neighbouring field. Their activities are monitored by the local wild-life specialist and the surviving chicks are ringed and recorded each year.
I asked this supposed expert about barn owl habitats to which he proclaimed that our ground was unsuitable and that we were unlikely to have any nearby..........

So @Penmoel BO**OKS to the supposed experts! I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from their mis-informed expertise as well!
JFDI the pond as it will encourage the wildlife way more than just a damp patch. I have done a few in my time.
I won a £10k forestry grant award for enhancing wildlife habitat, in a past life. :happy: In just the above way.
