Pool prices

Would you want to admit to having paid someone to sell your crop badly, and then publicly disclose exactly how badly, for the amusement of all your neighbours.
Or they might have sold it all at the top, and you wouldn't want to seem smug either.
I think it's mostly the former!

I wish I had let the Co-op market all of mine this year, they did a lot better than me, as they do most years.
Talking to people here its the way the majority of grain is sold locally, but my independent English streak makes me try and market it myself.

Just sell a bit every month and if you ever see the price starting with a ‘3’ sell it all on that day.

Pools are a risk management strategy and a useful benchmark against what you sold yourselves. I used to do some of each. Some years I averaged better, some worse.

Camgrain's 2021/22 pools weren't great because they sold a lot before Putin's invaded Ukraine, having started selling 2021 crop 12 months earlier. The 2022 pools look better than the virtual sales book I ran because I held on too long in the falling market last winter.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

My on farm sales are much better than the camgrain pools (which I think are pretty good).
Mostly because I don’t have proper grain storage on farm so had to sell it all by October!

We have to sell a proportion at harvest, sometimes you gain sometimes lose, over the years I very much doubt the losses would have built a grain store. Not least because once it’s in store a marketing malfunction is still possible here🙄

I bet if you averaged most people’s on farm sales, against all the different pools over a ten year period there would be hardly any difference. Some do better some years, some do worse, sometimes hit the highs and sometimes the lows on farm.

I’m interested to see how ADM’s wheat “fund” performs. Apparently the software sells when the price goes down! It’s as if they have lifted the AI straight out of my head. Surely it can’t be that bad?

Divide your tonnage up by the number of selling weeks and sell equal amount for every week. That’s the same risk management.

Like a tracker pool. Why not just put it in the pool and not even think about it. Be cheaper and less hassle and paperwork for you.

How 🤷🏻‍♂️, takes 2 mins to sell grain. Just ring up a trader and sell it. Then you get an email confirming the sale. People running the pools aren’t doing it for free.

Is that the algorithm one?
I think so, untouched by humans! I put a couple of load in the autumn one. Unfortunately for them I sold all the other early movement stuff on the same day so it will be impossible for them to match that 30%. I suppose stop loss selling is as good a strategy as any.
