Poor mans Guttlers

ok ive finished sowing first spring crop, and its quite slotty...using tine machine...older than jesus himself...but it works fine...on 7" spacings...i mounted 3 row harrows and draged two rows of pipe plus tyre roller...on the real wet dirt it slotted and seed laying open in trench...as its moist and warm its germinating no worries..so i will get away with it...

Id like to make or purchase some or get some ideas on what a poor man would do if he felt guttlers would do the trick..i think theyd work a treat in my dirt..i only need to cave a bit of dirt into trench..i dont mind having a slot as to catch moisture...

I would unbolt the harrows...will use them when soing winter crop as i sow dry and works a treat...so it would be more of a one piece bar across the back of drill...20 rows...

Ive been racking my brains as to what i can use or make cheap?

Any ideas?

I think the gutler will cave side of trench down...its not hard dirt...just like plastacine...the 3 row harrows are to wide spaced and dont dig up dirt even at full agression...the tyre roller bounces over the top...theres no dirt to push into trench...

I might try a 7" tyre rim and weld something to and see if i cant get that to do something...

I have to DD to conserve moisture

Yes i have harrows and have used them upside dow alot...problem is in this case there is no dirt to put back in trench...the points just smear through the soil and dont throw soil...only happened on about 30% of paddock..but i want to get it right...cant afford not too...

Hate to be the one to say it, but if that's the case , you've probably been on the paddock to soon.

I get what your saying but i was sowing on 1st day off summer!!! Way to late..part of the paddock the tines were skipping over top of dirt was so hard..parts where real slotty...just had to go for it...

In future i believe i will be faced with this conditions on this block atleast...

I was thinking of using 7" wide car tire rims and modifying so they have some edges to cave in trench...

Where the soil did flow the the result is awesome...

Could you mount a plain or shallow curved disc (maybe a bit smaller than a vaderstad carrier type disc) at say 5 deg angle at the side of each slot ( about 20mm away) If you were in the UK i would lend you some from a Bettinson disc drill to try!

That could work...the cost would be to great over here compared to using car rims i can get for free..ill keep looking around...as it turned out the crop has come up good so just need a slight improvement..

Can you post a picture of the machine & the tine/ drill coulter ??

Tomorrow if not to wet i will get some pics...of my state of the art drilling rig...and what the trenches look like etc...

Got take some pics of a sheep handler as well so im hoping its that wet its about all i can do...

The barley in the trench with a touch of dirt seems to be going ok...best part if sowing with a trench you can get in a bit lower to get onto moisture without burying seed somdeep its delayed getting up and going...

Heres pic of trench....the tines compress sides...so doesnt throw dirt...in about third of paddock...third is ok other third to hard lol!!...when it does throw dirt in germ is perfect...the hard bits i need to improve soil....

First pic trench...2nd pic where dirt fe in trench.

Nothing wrong with that crop !!
It was your drill rig I was enquiringly about, though.

It could be better...if grain sitting open in trench its prone to birds and seed burst in event of big rain and it germinates quicker in soil...

I will take pic of the seeding rig today....

Im still trying to work out best way to get N and mang and fungicide into crop....its at 4 leaf...will be 5 after weekend id say...
