Hello,
Just after settling a slight debate within the household as to whether subsoiling should be done before ploughing or afterwards?
Assuming heavy compaction post late lifting.
Thoughts much appreciated thank you!
Firstly ,,dont plough ,,all you will do is bury the smalls which will all regrow in the next crop ,,Very bad idea,,Subsoil it first, this will leave all the waste on the surface for the frost to destroy ,work it over and drill
I wouldn't assume anything. I'd get out there with a spade and find out where the compaction was. As above, if you plough you'll get groundkeepers for years which won't help the eelworm egg decline. I can see why you'd plough to turn up fresh soil for immediate drilling. A bit late for sowing anything now - why not wait a month? The frosts will take the volunteers out & you won't have to spend January watching the rooks pulling the corn up.
Answering the question directly, subsoiling the ploughing afterwards will require tracks to avoid losing traction and recompacting the surface layers. Doing it before the ploughing can make turning furrows over harder as they break up quickly.
There is certainly no single answer to post harvest after potatoes.
So much depends on variety , weather conditions , soil types, etc.
An early variety topped green in dry conditions , is a totally different beast to November lifted Cara with 6 feet of dead top and 18 inch ruts.
Do not subsoil unless the soil is dry!
I am sure at this time of year the only option is leave for spring drilling.
If it is very dry it may be worth working the top after a heavy frost , to bring up more remainers
