Where are your costings to say "rent a few hundred acres and make a bit on that"?
His growing costs are pretty accurate. Growing on your own ground with old kit isn't as easy as you make it sound.
Again, depends on the market you are aiming for and your available time. On paper, old kit looks cheap. In reality, it breaks down a lot and can have some huge repair/maintainance costs. If your old harvester damages the potatoes one season by bruising, scuffing, hairline cracks. Then whole crop needs consigned to the stockfeed pile.
Old kit still has to be replaced at some point.
Sounds good to me. Let him dip his toe. Would you perchance be trying to discourage him from such a lucrative crop. .
