Potato Harvest 2018

With a big carry over from last season and better utilisation rates, don't expect any big price jump.

And please don't plant a bigger area next year thinking you are on a winner now!

We've sold out this week usually have potatoes till late April

I was offered last years potatoes this week at wholesalers!!!! Bought Scottish reds good ones (2018 grown) at £320 per ton.

Last year's potatoes? Wouldn't have thought there was many of them left by now. Will be pretty tough and hate to think how much cipc is inside them.

Being a chip shop potato grower I’m not sure on that, I think there will be a big jump when we finish. There always is! I think we get done roughly the same as the other ambient store growers around here. And I don’t think there is that many top frying potatoes about. They are using the good stuff now, it will come to a point where they will have to use poorer stuff and pay high money imo.

For example for frying we have Agria, performer, caberet and piper. The Agria are the top fryers then performer, then caberet. They are the ones they keep asking for. Due to ACD the piper do not fry. These piper (approx 600t) look a lovely sample but it looks like they’ll have to go in bulk to a processor. That’s a third of our output not going into bags. I’ve heard that my neighbours are doing any orders they can get due to rots in store. Usually these guys would be shut up shop till the new year.

We grade steadily out as we can’t really keep them that well with our stores and generally get empty about May time. I think between May and the new crop there will be some unheard of prices. Don’t get me wrong this is not good as there will be a knock on effect. Fryers may well shut up shop.

As for acreage, by next year we would have doubled from two years ago. These are not extra acres to the market. We’ve gone in with another member on here who’s taken on more land from a previous potato grower who’s retired. If I hadn’t have done that I’m sure Mr 2000 acres of spuds up the road would have.
