Potato price 2018

Haulage of potatoes to China shouldn't be that difficult, there must be plenty of large container ships heading back to China loaded with empty containers. Just fill a few of them with potatoes.

Exactly, no shortage of empty boats heading back to the Far East. The cost of shipping is likely the square root of bugger all.

Aren't the Chinese the largest conssumers of potatoes in the world ?

And well done on the French in getting to that market. May be gives an option going forward, rather than seeing potatoes being flogged for 29p / 2kg during Christmas week. Disgrace

Ah, but we do not know the contract price! Could easily find a very disgruntled French grower wishing he had never contracted with the current free buy price so high!! Who knows. But I do enjoy these ice to eskimo stories.

It would surprise you how much potatoes particularly from Belgium go around the world normally as chips etc.

I export seed to Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel every year, it all goes in containers now rather than a ships hold full of pots as it was a few years ago.

Had some a few years ago that went to Uzbekistan ( I think) trucked to Holland - boat to Latvia and about 10 days in a train through Russia.

Was wondering if it could be doing with new cup belts as cups seem a bit flexible. That’s what I liked about the standen the cups are more rigid

My total sales won’t be vastly different from last year: contract tonnage the same; contract price the same: free buy price 4x: free buy tonnage about half.

I must admit we have done very well, still on £420 for Agria. But they’ll be finished in a couple of weeks. Got a shed full of Caberet to go, not such a nice sample though. Piper will finish next wk at £300 for non fryers.

Talk of £500+ last autumn, can’t see that happening can any of you?
