Should get going again tomorrow or Friday once other jobs out of the way. I believe there are quite a few planters going this week on light land.

Anybody want to hazard a guess as to what price we will be on next winter. My buyer is talking the job down already.... Too much carry, takes 2 seasons to recover from a bad one, new crop will catch up despite late planting etc.

It is only speculation that prices will be higher this year, certainly no guarantees at all. Don't see it being as good as expected. Indeed, could be worse. If the early season crop is a month late, it will push into normal maincrop timing, which means maincrop will have a one month shorter marketing season, so higher supplies each month?

If early season is late, buyers already know that and will be securing extra supplies from abroad right now.

If a late planted crop means higher prices why don't we plant late every year?
Here's another radical idea.
If a reduced planted area leads to less spuds and thus higher prices , why don' we all cut back by 10%. Maybe some kind of marketing board for potatoescould be set up to regulate how much was planted each year. Every farmer would only be able to grow a certain area. Trying to think of a name for it..... quota
Do you think it would work?

I like your thinking, but sadly potatoes weren't the guaranteed success you would expect when quotas did exist.

Although I am a bit confused as to why potato growers getting together and agreeing on a maximum area they should plant is illegal. Deemed as trade distorting and a cartel.

Whereas oil companies can get together. Car manufacturers will reduce production to manage supply. Tractor manufacturers will do the same, fert companies? In fact just about any manufacturing company will do it, quite legally.

Been offered a contract in bags for chipping £160pt starting Nov,rising £10pm from then on.

What u reckon?

If it was starting at 250 then 10 a week. You ought to have some of that. But I think that they could start of at 300 for November. We are in a worse position this year compared to 2 years ago and that’s where I was in December. I’m 5 weeks late planting so yields will be down. Coupled with reduced acreage planted. I hope we are on a win win this year. I’ve got a wife to keep pleased [emoji3]

So £200 for March then, many many years ago I ran similar idea past a potato merchant and he said that IT would work for both of us BUT his fish shops though loyal and in a high price year would lap up paying less would in the following low price year would be on the phone beating him up cos their mate with a fish shop is paying less! The chip shop, along with a bit of country pub trade, is the last bastion of free trade in potatoes, after this last season it must be very tempting.
