id never have the scale to succeed against established growers 500-1000 acre growers are common now and these guys must be making something at it the amount theyve spent the last
Most are in south lincolnshire. This is how dry it is harvesting daffodils, probably the worst I have ever seen ,if you look very carefully you can see two bulbs !View attachment 1048128

Can anyone help me get my head around the potato job - The prices I hear vs the rents I hear of and the kit I see with diesel and fert where it is....how on earth does it work? I remember prices when I was a student in the 80's that we rarely hear of today - hearing of stockfeed going out now at a few £ a ton with massive electric costs to have stored them for 8 months. Is anyone actually making any money or just winging it? Hearing of a few locally slashing acreage this season but what they have was agreed on contract months ago..... Def one of lifes mysteries!

Margins per acre go down so acreage must go up to pay for everything. We don't rent land so have a slight advantage in that we don't have to pay out the cash (but there is always the option to rent out). So in cash terms we are better off. We also run relatively old kit but again you just replace a non cash cost with more maintenance in theory. Need to be technically efficient and on your game to maximise margins.

Another 2 weeks of this heat and it might be a different story. They will be under some sort of stress from the heat. And the longer they are checked the more at risk they are to splitting/ secondary growth. And given that the rainfall amount usually averages out somewhere throughout the year we might yet have some fun getting them out. It's unfortunate that it always needs a growing/ harvesting disaster to get a decent price.
