I used to grow seed on contract

A handful of wild oats and it would fail certification ........... blackgrass however not covered by the inspections if I recall correctly?

Only if it yields the same , or better , new seed only needs 2cwt . acre more to pay for itself
What makes certified seed new seed? It is surely no more new seed than home saved seed, both are new seeds of their parent crop. I recently saw a trial site where one variety, supposed to have been grown from certified seed, looked pretty disastrous, poor establishment, low vigour, low tiller numbers... That particular batch of certified seed will yield an awful lot less than other crops of the same variety grown from farm saved seed....

I haven’t done the sums yet for this year, but last year a £10k from home saving across all WW SB OSR and W Beans on 500ha

WW was the smallest £/ha saving, OSR the largest

It takes a bit of management to ensure clean fields destined for seed and to be kept separate etc, but nothing more than a bit of common sense and planning

But what’s not to like ??

Funnily enough since I started hss I seem to have clean WW with no Barley vols...

Can you saved seed from saved seed, or is it best to save from certified?

Either. In theory, if you save from home sown that's been there for multiple generations you're selecting the best suited to your land type if you clean it hard. Beware of breeding up contaminants & your plant & machinery hygiene will have to be very good. I buy C1 and keep it for one generation.

I normally farm save seed from a first wheat but I didn't remember to grow any of my second wheat variety as a first wheat :banghead:.. Would I be asking for trouble taking seed for this Autumns second wheat area from this years second wheat crop or would it be wiser to buy it in?

If you're happy it hasn't got too many off types in it & you get it tested for disease, then go for it.
