I’m fancying a Tedder to replace haybob. Don’t have a huge work load for it but mow with a drum mower & in older hay type meadows this leaves a swath that the haybob struggles to tear apart evenly. I make haylage & jay & have a nice side line selling to horse people so want to make quality bales that can make a premium price! Is a pottinger 540n a good machine? Found a tidy one & the top rotors turn in which I like the idea of for our narrow lanes - is this a good feature? Any other suggestions if this machine isn’t a good one?

Yes, bought one 2 years ago. Wheels have 2 positions, one for " light " crops, where the machine sits lower, picks up all the crop, but can leave it a bit lumpy like a Haybob would. The other position for " heavy " crops has the machine higher, and " cocked " up which spreads the grass nicely with no lumps. I tend to use this setting for the first 3 days, then switch to the other setting to make sure all grass is picked up....if this makes sense.
TBH, I find all this a bit of a palaver. Others will be along soon to tell us the hooked tine Lely is much better. Never used one, so can't comment.
If nothing else, it's twice as fast as a Haybob. And it's certainly an improvement on the lumpy Haybob when used on the heavy crop setting.

Wheels can be angled too, to move crop away from the fence / hedge. Don't overdo the revs, otherwise you end up with a lump 4' in from the fence which will take forever to dry........

Thanks for the detailed replies. Sounds a decent tool then. I’ve been told lely are the business but don’t fancy spending a lot (to me!) on an obsolete machine. L
