Poultry expert recommendation

On behalf of a friend- looking for someone to talk to who could advise on the financial viability of 20 year old poultry sheds. Doesn’t need to be a consultant- probably happier with farmer/operator opinions. He just wants a quick chat with regards to how the industry has probably moved on in 20 years and potentially sheds of that age are not viable.

My opinion at this present time starts with "LABOUR" to do the work necessary. I have heard of lots of Farmers wanting to build new poultry farms and then rent them out economically, but the problem is staff and staff commitment Livestock is 24/7 365 days a year.

Sorry, don’t know anything about poultry meat, it’s essentially a different industry to egg production.

Some of the older buildings still do a good job a lot depends on condition of the building. They way not be all singing and dancing like a new shed but if you know what you are doing older buildings will do the job

Agreed. Though it depends on what the processor's standard is. Asbestos roofs, posts every 8 feet, DIY wiring - I can see why they'd not want too much of that on their books, yet I'm still using some sheds like that and the general consensus from washers and contractors is that there's a lot worse than those out there still.

20 years doesn't seem that old to me. If there are no issues with the EA, angry neighbours, and the place hasn't been built by Caractacus Potts with dodgy wiring and an unfathomable kit, then I don't see why a 20 year old farm needs to be laid to rest anytime soon. Poultry farming is no way to get rich quick these days, but there are worse sectors to be in.

I guess there are other issues, like is there accomodation nearby, and any renewable plant on site that make the difference between how sought after a site's going to be, but in the main I'd have thought 20 yr old sheds, if they were built properly, should be a very long way from becoming redundant.

Location for the potential contract is key, the buildings should be fine, even if the sheds are tired the site itself will have a value. Maybe think about 3% window area for compliance if they are needed. As all sorts could be hidden in the walls.
