Will your contract allow you to block calve its made a massive difference in our farm to family life balance
Yeah should be fine, they want milk from september ideally and dont really want any after christmas (so january and February to give a 10 month lactation).

That's partly why I wanted to feed maize from calving until september because they'll pay extra for the milk (120% i think) on any extra litres

If you have a lot of the infrastructure in place, it's a good leg up.

Keep it mostly grass, get soil right on any reseeding. You live in an area where forage trading is a thing.
Bet'cha hay can be bought for less than making it most years.
Undersown cereals are a good and cheap spring reseed after autumn turnips, kale, rye, etc.

Mixed farming is a lovely way to farm, just make sure there is no cross subsidisation between enterprises. Which is easier said than done.

Come up for a 2 week crash course in sleep deprivation if you want.
150 block calving on your own is a decent task.
@Jdunn55 this is a real offer and without doubt the best thing you could do. Former beef farmer just a few years ago he’s got a few cows kicking about now.
Not a bad offer indeed.

The right person could learn more about herd management in them 2 weeks than in 2 years of going it alone.
Or in 19 years of consultant led conversion 😂
Sorry didn't realise it was a genuine offer! When do you calve and where abouts are you?
I was only joking in reference to my post about them being dry!
