Will your contract allow you to block calve its made a massive difference in our farm to family life balance

Yeah should be fine, they want milk from september ideally and dont really want any after christmas (so january and February to give a 10 month lactation).

That's partly why I wanted to feed maize from calving until september because they'll pay extra for the milk (120% i think) on any extra litres

No they dont come down that far. We only have Arla, Saputo and Roddas down this end.

If you have a lot of the infrastructure in place, it's a good leg up.

Keep it mostly grass, get soil right on any reseeding. You live in an area where forage trading is a thing.
Bet'cha hay can be bought for less than making it most years.
Undersown cereals are a good and cheap spring reseed after autumn turnips, kale, rye, etc.

Mixed farming is a lovely way to farm, just make sure there is no cross subsidisation between enterprises. Which is easier said than done.

Sort your own grass/ground out first, can always buy in a bit of forage and some milk that way.

Buy in rolled maize if you want some starch.
