Hello Bald Rick you can find more about our (Coleg Sir Gar & Power & Water) Slurry dewatering & Water purification project as seen at the Dairy Tech event on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/prosiectslyriproject/ our website will be up & running in the next couple of weeks and will be on www.slurryprojectwales.co.uk We will be holding open days at Gelli Aur College when we get the whole system up & running in a few months. We had a huge amount of interest at the Dairy Tech Event & this new technology will have a huge impact on Farming and the environment.

This tech is something I am very interested in but Gelli Aur is in another country and I tend to get lost passed Dolgellau :)
I will be watching your website closely as I don't "do" facebook

Am I correct in thinking that it will be very power hungry & that it would be best suited to farms where an renewable option was available? We have planning for 129Kw of solar but have held off for the moment

We don't have finalised costs yet as it is still in the set up stage but it will be a cost effective solution. Plus there may be grants available when the system is proven. The system we are setting up at Gelli Aur Farm can cope with the slurry from 500 cows working on approx 2 cubic meters of slurry per hour. For larger numbers of cows/ slurry then you increase the number of reactors in the system.

How long do you expect the system to be tested for before roll-out?Any ideas regarding system life expectancy and on going maintenance costs? Is any sand bedding going to damage the unit ? (We bed on sand and this and the slurry generated go into a covered slurry store. Collecting yard slurry and parlour washings go to another outdoor lagoon and there is an amount of sand and grit from cows' feet and coats that gets included.)

Your website link doesn't work and Facebook isn’t for me.

The idea sounds really good! What kind of ball park do you think the cost of an unit will be if its successful? Just an idea would be good!

Hello Vantage, The Project runs until June 2020 but we hope to have roll-out in the next 18 months. Sand in slurry should mostly be removed in the first de-watering separation stage, but some will get through but it shouldn't greatly affect the process as it sinks to the bottom & can be removed at certain stages. Life expectancy of the system is around 25 years and on going maintenance will include replacing the anodes in the reactors periodically which is not hugely expensive. If you email me on [email protected] I can add you to our database to keep you up to date with developments & open days etc. Let me know your cow numbers, farm name etc.

Hello @Iron150 we don't have a final cost of the unit as yet- but it will be cost effective. Here is the link to our youtube animated video that show estimated cost savings of the system - savings on nutrients, water, diesel
If you want to be kept up to date with developments please email me on [email protected] and I will add you to our database, please include your farm details- herd size, current slurry storage system.

Hello @TT. Pathogens present in the raw slurry at the start are partially separated off within the solids at the start, the remaining ones in the liquid fraction will go through the reactors and some/ most will probably be destroyed at this stage, others will be in the sludge removed at this stage which is then added back onto the initial solids heap. There won't be any pathogens remaining in the end stage liquid- we will be checking by sampling.

Hello @Chips not sure that depends on your situation and system, plus if there is grant funding available, it may be. The prototype we are setting up can cope with 500 cows worth of slurry at 2m3 per hour, that will be the smallest unit size of the system, but farms with fewer cows/slurry wouldn't need to run it for as many hours per day. Send me your email & farm details & I will add you to the database to keep you informed [email protected] That goes for anyone else who wants more information on Prosiect Slyri
