Just had a look at the t&cs for new 24 agreement because I was curious about the 25% rule for limited actions. Turns out that for old 23 agreements you can do 100% if you want and still do 25% limited actions alongside in new 24 agreements .

If application was in 23, but initiated on 1/4/24 by Defra, which year is it classified as for the above?
as more whole field SFI looks inviting for now

So the application date is crucial. Not the start date
And i can add , without the 25% threat, is that correct?
When was your application submitted?

You say you applied in 2023, but started April 2024?

Anyhow can only increase or decrease existing options, not add new ones as we were promised.

You need to substitute the word 'started' with 'submitted' Andy. Pedantic point but ensures the accuracy of your post.
When they announced the changes back in March. It was that any application started before midnight that day was to be still "23" rules. Then of course - somewhat predictably- the rpa website was "under maintenance" that evening.

Mine started on 1st March so no confusion here, but for some this point will be valid.

It really is a "sliding doors" moment. I could easily of delayed starting an application by a month. Also I could easily of omitted the single acre I have into Ahl1 - which is now the most valuable acre on the farm!!!

The more you think about it, the more of a sh!tshow it's become.

im not so sure you can increase any options you claimed to a 23 agreement even if you started in 23 never mind march 24 .Im informed by defra you have to start a new sfi24 at least thats what they said when I rang 10 days ago . I was told anything upgraded or added to i.e higher acerage has to be on a new sfi 24 which is against what they said but nobody seems to be making much fuss about it i.e our representatives but it could change on a whim who knows cos they at the end of the phone dont know for certain

Last paragraph is the important one here
Defra have changed the rules mid stream or as ive said before broken their contract , we cant at least not without paying monies back. It seems to me its an entrapment policy cos if you do wish to add things as we were told we could we will have to have a new sfi 24 which puts you on another 18 months then come next year and a new sfi25 and a similar process you are effectively signing up for 6 years from day one ,plus when your original 3 year agreement comes to an end if you wish to continue you will be obliged to sign up again to renew your existing options .
We were clearly told those signing for a 23 sfi would be able to add things as they came on board to the existing agreement and still come to an end 3 years from start date the waffle about simplyfying the process and making it more flexible is a trap to give you little choice but to continue ,I dont see many folk wanting to run several concurrent agreements it will be a minefield to plan timings and fulfill the options in a rotation .
I dont think theve thought through what this means in terms of rotations land tenure and retirement plans

There is a thread about the SFI head Janet Hughes. She was quite gushing last time she engaged on TFF about the flexibility and listening to farmers. Wonder what she has to say. A you point out this development makes it difficult for any claimant approaching retirement or knowing they will lose land in a few years. I presume Janet Hughes and her team failed to ask the software developers f the scheme software could take all the flexibility she and her political team were offering. Guess the answer is No. Hey ho. Have to muddle through.
