Pregnant wife and cade lambs

Hi all,

After some advice/wisdom/opinion- My wife has stayed out of the lambing sheds, I'm changing and showering elsewhere before I come in etc, but I was wondering about giving her the cade lambs to deal with?

They're on an electric shepherdess, so not directly hands on.

Any thoughts appreciated- NHS, midwife etc are all a bit vague!

When my mrs was pregnant the we ice we were given by all our nurses/doctors was she could do anything with “dry stock”.. aslong as she was nowhere near any birthing fluids, wet lambs, and anything that had came into contact with wet lambs/birthing fluids within the last 48 hours… my setup couldn’t really accommodate that so she was only able to work with the sheep once they turned out but if you had a cade lamb pen away from all the lambing ewes and mothering pens there’s no reason she couldn’t run the cade lambs

My wife is pregnant and she stays away, not worth the risk, sold most what’s spare of cade lambs this year, funnily enough 14 of last year’s cade grades came back this morning averaging 21kg dw £122 per head 😬

Bit of bad planning that, should of put the tup in sooner with your wife and she would of had her lamb before lambing,

Anyway just don't risk it, keep her well away and you keep clean

I believe toxo is the biggest risk and our gp offered a blood test to see if the Mrs had been infected before. I can't remember the result now......

A lot of lambs carry cryptosporidium and you would never know which ones, couple that with e-coli, salmonella, orf and anything else lambs carry that can’t always be seen without even mentioning birthing fluids/enzo/toxo. We have a visitor program here and healthy children of 10-11 arn’t allowed to touch a lamb or ewe until over 3 weeks after birth, they have to wash hands straight away and are also wearing full waterproofs. I don’t do bottle lambs but if I did I definitely wouldn’t if the wife was pregnant!

Now, I know this won’t be a popular idea. But if I were needing the wife too see too the cades due too being very busy with everything else (perfectly normal, nothing wrong with it) and she were pregnant. If I couldn’t give them away I would knock them. Nasty but I value the wife and baby much higher than my entire flock of sheep. (And I’m sheep mad). Mine is completely banned from coming through the gate into the main yard until lambing is well over. She’s designated tea lady, chef & cleaner.
