Depends where you buy them from suppose, we've had homebred ones tupping at 9 years old, and expensive bought in ones not make their first clip 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Mine last anywhere from 1 month too 8 years. I put it down too too much high power feed as a tup lamb.
Last winter I turned out 24 tups, sold 2 old boys after their work and 10 died between December and mid February. I could not keep the buggers going. I had tried 2 new breeders, won’t be buying from them again. Shearlings that shrink too nothing after tupping while the ewes are fit as fire.

That's an expensive job to replace them, I have 15 tups out that the moment and all are as fit as when they went in, 10 of them have done 4 or more tuppings now.
I meant to say 11 of the tups are Suffolk, 2 lleyn, 1 beltex X texel and 1 charollais.

Got 3 homebred texel rams here which are 2017 born, 2 2018 and the rest youngsters. Last texel I had “die” with me was Christmas Day 2019 my favourite ram was in the middle of the field with a cracked head 🤦🏻‍♂️ I know the culprit, a 2016 born Charollais x Texel ram, weighing well over 130kg, served between 150-400 ewes a year and his condition hasn’t changed in years.

I will admit all 10 weren’t wastage. 2 were big texels that had a scrap in mid feb. One dead, other wandered around brain dead for a week then died, 1 tried swimming in the Goyt, 1 was pneumonia. Rest were wastage.

MV or OPA can be present in even the most ''respected'' flocks. Both diseases are far more widespread than realised.

Meanwhile the Gov. is giving grants for automatic weighers and shedders etc.............

Those breeders that are doing nothing about it will continue for as long as people are buying their wares without worrying about it. The ram buyers need to ask questions, rather than stand ring side and buy whatever tickles their fancy on sale day. Those that do so have only themselves to blame tbh.

I bought a texel tup straight off his mother at weaning three years ago.
Is a great tup, however, this year got beaten up by the Charolais tup (who looks like a thug) lost two teeth and was panting like a steam train when I found him up against the fence.👺 Thought he was going to go tits up but with alot of TLC he's back to himself again. Agree that overfed on concentrate/cereal when young does them no favors.
The texel tup is naturally big and strong from grass alone...think that helped him through. The Charolais was grass reared too and apart from his feet is a great tup too
