I think the military will take over eventually if JC is elected. Probably already being discussed. If he won't take the nuclear deterrent seriously he is undermining the defence of the country and that will not be tolerated.

JC has had his day already I think. He is starting to overplay his hand and be seen for the political opportunist that he is. His economic policies and his chancellor have no credibility whatsoever. A few months with interest rates at 12% ( because nobody would lend to labour below those rates last time there was a left wing labour government), rising unemployment and bankruptcy in the public sector so nothing to pay all those public servants with, and people will want the Tories back again.

I am just old enough to remember Harold Wilson, Jim Callaghan and Denis Healey, 3 day weeks, power cuts and the winter of discontent. Labour is always brought down by its own core supporters.

Just give it time.

I have to reply to this - a military coup! Get a grip. This is not Pakistan nor a Tom Clancy novel. The nuclear deterrent is an irrelevance. When is it ever going to get used? What are you going to do with it? Keeps BA Systems going in Workington and Barrow and our loose grip on the top table at the UN. JC is only saying what I and from conversation several folk I know think. Big white elephant. Next thing you will be saying is you are off to that Observer Corps bunker at Binbrook.

If you work in the public sector and these will be 'normal folk' - you know nurses, bobbies, firemen, binmen, looks as though JC has rattled the cage to get the 1% pay restraint lifted - might be worth letting him rattle the Tory cage some more yet and see what loose change they find down the sofa.

The nuclear deterrent is relevant precisely because it is never used but is always ready. Lose faith in that, and disband it, and you are wide open to invasion.

A military government was discussed during the low points of the seventies. I know this as a fact. The plan was never enacted but it was ready.

I am aware of the 70's - seen the TV programme. Different world. I am always surprised the Spanish and Danes have not been invaded in recent years after all, as far as I am aware, they do not have nuclear warheads or two and a couple of Trident submarines. So who is going to invade if we disband the nuclear deterrent? Russians? Chinese? Iranians? Americans? Germans? At the moment seems to be East Europeans - so proxy Russians maybe?

Putin might well creep further west if we scale back our defences. Nobody thinks it will happen, till it happens, then it's too late.

There has never been a time when we have had greater need of strong defence.

We will be straight back to the seventies if JC gets his way. He won't be able to fulfill his promises. The country will be bankrupted. There will be unrest on a large scale when can't deliver the goods. Who do you think will sort the mess out?

Well if my geography is correct he will have to come through Poland, Germany and the Benelux before he gets to Dunkirk. Maybe they can stop him first? Or are you suggesting Putin might form a peace alliance with the remaining 27 EU states after we have left on basis they will not act if Russia invades UK. My goodness another Ribbentrop and Molotov deal. This plot is good and well worthy of Tom Clancy. I am the first to say we spend to much on defence - offence more like. Every time I see those blasted Typhoons burning up av gas at Coningsby I think of the constructive things that money could be spent on.

That's the thing about defence. Works best when it's so big you don't have to use it.

Our nuclear defence and armed forces contributing to NATO actually keep Poland, and the Baltic states safer than they might be from Russian invasion.

Well OK, anyway sorry to tease, NATO is the answer though you got me worried as I shall have to keep a close eye over my back on the Marsh today watching for the invasion fleet. Mind the last time that Russian carrier chugged by the smoke belching out if it could be seen a fair distance off and not sure then if they could launch the airplanes!! I will though give some thought to cleaning out and dusting down the pillbox. Best wishes,

So there is no magic money tree? Corbyn will drive us all to bankruptcy?
Hmmm

I do feel when they are struggling on a wage that is in effect worth less by 17% than a few years ago, and they see there was money on the money tree, they will not be happy!

The trouble is all public sector workers are just lumped together for a pay rise. Some deserve it,like nurses etc.But i would not give any rise to report writing paper pushers etc.On your red chart,i would omit the arts and under 25s.

True dat. I've got my Kung Fu class tonight and our master is an unassuming chap but if you knew what he was capable of, you would never cross him. I could probably do a decent job of mashing someone up with a bit of foot pattern 8 but he can take you by the hand and lead you to a world of pain without even trying. Point is, anyone who knows what he is capable of would never attack him. Because they would be destroyed in seconds. It doesn't matter how big you are, he will take you down.

He never uses it of course because he is a good man. But he has it and nobody is going to mess with his family or friends.
