Preparing for war

Hey Mr Putin, we are watching you...

You will note the use of pilotless aircraft which neatly avoids any issue (i.e an armed extraction to retrieve the pilot) if the thing is shot down. Altitude of 51,000 feet means insane range and even better performance from it's SAR.
Whose the we? I thought you were a farmer or Covid specialist or or or  .......... obviously not.

You make it sound like you and your fiends (er sorry I meant friends) are on the potential battlefield. You clearly know so much about military data and issues, and quite often spew reams of information at the drop of a hat, Im very impressed that a farmer would know so much. Your usually such busy people, with little time to sit in front of a computer all day :scratchhead:

Absolutely- I am watching Putin. It's my main concern at the moment, in fact, I'm sat in a metal shack on an Airforce base watching a Predator drone feed right now.

Hmm... been chatting with a chum who is Russian, but was brought up in the Ukraine during the Cold War; he's lived in the UK for over twenty years, has family in Russia and Ukraine and is a research Professor - bright fellow.

He thinks Putin will get whatever he can, he can't see that there are the troop numbers to take and hold much of Ukraine; but thinks there will be a hard push West, and than a fairly rapid strategic withdrawal to what ever point is deemed realistically defendable.

Interestingly, he says that his people in Russia are well aware of the propaganda from the Putin regime for what it is. Yet they also find it hard to believe Putin would order an attack against what they regard as a kindred people. His people in Ukraine are putting on a brave face, but are really very concerned, some have sent all their savings to him over here.

He is certain that if the Russians attack, although there may be great difficulty in static defence, there would be a very hard campaign fought against them. He reckons it would be much greater than the Russian regime or people realise. This gives him the worst worry, since he thinks that a hard resistance to Russia would result in more back from Russia, etc. etc. a very vicious spiral.

He really is a very bright chap, and not given to hyperbole at all; I've known him for about a dozen or so years, and haven't seen him panic once in that time, but he is undeniably very nervous now. From my own experience, looking at a potential / actual war is a very different thing when you know the people and places involved - I don't know either in this case, but just talking with him has given me that awful feeling one sometimes gets in one's stomach. :(

Serious question. How can savings be moved, without tax liabilities arising?

I don't know the details, and he's a geneticist not an economist, but I think the idea is for 'investment', so presumably property. But, thinking on it, I can't see there being a great problem with bringing legitimate money into the country.

Today Ukraine has begun mobilising reservists, which is anyone who has completed National Service (up to the age of 60).

Makes me wonder what a pickle we would be in if we suddenly needed to swell our armed forces through conscription, implementing National Service or asking for voluntary enlistments.

Wouldnt need too many pairs of boots by the time all the various "groups" had said it was against their rights
