private airstrip enquiry

Don't know who's it is but yes, near Bagby. Looks a bit dicey to me.
He runs a flying school there and its a place a lot of people have gained their NPPL(M) licence. They fly in under the wires. The runway is quite short maybe 300m or so. I've heard if you can land there you can land anywhere, it makes a propa pilot of you!

They're both quite close from the air and with only a letter difference in the name may cause confusion for some.

Bagby has a nice long 700m runway and no wires to contend with.

That sounds more like the 1 I landed at, was looking at the photo thinking I was sure bagby didn't look quite like that :rolleyes:

Hi Notafarmer
You are absolutely right, you do not require planning permission if you you do not exceed 28 days flying per year, however in reality if you choose the location of the farm strip carefully (away from the village itself and as many properties as possible) flying more regularly is not an issue.
I have had a 500 metre strip on the farm here in Somerset for 13 years used most weeks, only 2 resident aircraft and occasional visitors and we have never had a single complaint, in fact most people in our village are not aware of the flying activity.
The reality is that due to the 13 year of continuous use (evidence by aircraft flying logs) we have a very good case of gaining a certificate of lawful use should we desire in the future.
My advice would be make a polite enquiry to the Flying Farmers Association regarding a whether there may be an established strip you could operate from in the area you wish to be based. If not then identify a suitable field to set up a strip by flying over the area and then knocking on farmhouse doors nearby and making some polite enquiries, I was approached in this way 14 years ago and it has led me to gaining a ppl and operating my own aircraft which is a wonderful escape from milking cows!
Best of luck

Thanks Fireworkfarmer for your detailed reply, your suggestion seems like a practical one. I went up earlier today in fact on a recon mission. Prior to this I had been using Google Earth to find somewhere but distance was difficult to gauge, as I found out when a potential candidate that I visited the other day by foot turned out to be half the length that I expected it to be!

The only thing I would be careful of letting anyone do it is if it ends up officially on NATS at a high enough level, then basically your agriculture planning is null and void within 3km.

We don't have one but there is one close and we have fallen foul of this this last 6 months and now as everything is digitised mapping it comes straight up as a condition for them to check. When it was only if you knew one was there a lot went through, now seems much sharper and therefore much more expense ;)

My strip is within 300m of the farm and hangar:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm: sorry machinery shed is at the farm.

Nice to have but I wouldn't dream of letting anyone else rent it for £1200/year if I wasn't a pilot myself.

750m by 20m (ish) plus a 300m by 10m taxiway:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm: sorry grass margin

It sounds very selfish ,but unless one creates a "NEW" private airstrip well away from houses(very rare in this country) ,excellent approaches east/west or vice versa, I would be very reluctant to share it , the main reason being that everthing is O.K until there is an accident minor or fatal,and then I would think your problems would start with the C.A.A, and insurance liablility.
When I was tenant farmer I had a one way strip due to slope of strip,no way would I let other people land on it for above reason.
Bit off topic but has AVGAS started to fall in price?

We farm next to a couple of these and never had a problem with planes. maybe the lender can get aside from the pilot sometime?
Its a bit different here than in the USA regarding farm strips. Farm strips are much more accepted in the USA as a way of life, here they are associated with spoilt rich kids, which in general is wrong. I worked bloody hard for my PPL/IR. @notafarmer I would strongly recommend that you talk to the Flying Farmers Associations as they have a lot of knowledge.

.....and to all you eggbeater lovers out there. Helicopters and sheep are the only two things in Gods creation to take the fastest route to death. Plankers rule :ROFLMAO:

Fly safe.

Picking up on this thread from earlier this year, I may have the opportunity to rent out 20 Ac to an individual for a private grass strip.

He wants 600 yards which he would get here. He wants to use some buildings for storage so win win for me.

Does anyone have any recent figures on what people pay for such land usgae. When he asked me how much the land generates a year I suggested he should pay £15k plus which he didn't seem shocked by.

Does this seem fair?
