At €2000 for the complete shaft clutch unit I'll take my chances and grease it regularly

That offset mower i was gonna have needed a complete new shaft, 2 x wide angle ends, 2 tubes and a complete guard....was told it was a 1000 quid all in

mower didnt do what i wanted, so it went back to the dealer with the fooked pto that they sent it to me with in the first place!!!

Hence why you trust in super duper grease that doesn't need to be applied as often....

Posibly they put the nipple pointing inwards ( on back of cross joint) because you can sometimes push splined shaft to far in and damage - brake the grease nipple with the end of the shaft
Or more likely they know it will not get greased so it fails and they sell more

There on the back I think so that you can grease them in situ through the hole in the guard. Newish Class rakes are ideal, all the ujs grease through the caps and can all be done in place.

Surely it can't be too hard for make pto manufacturers to make an auto grease system in the middle of the shaft?

i think on all of out stuff weve chopped holes into grease them the folding power harrow has the be the worst on the farm tho we had a new pto shaft on it with the nipple on the caps its far better

don't really have this problem, have a 90 degree grease nipple on the inside of the uj's, whip the shaft off rest against my leg, bend uj, pistol grip grease gun straight on through the end rather than faffing through the cover , couple squirts flip over and repeat , 2 minutes max

But on some of these machines such as potato harvesters or big balers, the bloody pto weighs as much as a small child, and with wide angle joints its often a greasy, slippery and floppy mess to take it on and off every day

I do the same but it doesn't go as smoothly
Try and take pto off, struggle on, greasy hands/sleeves then lean against the tractor tyre, mucky side. Rest it against my knee, falls off as I try to hold the grease gun and the pto and the tube while it traps my fingers, pto the falls apart, never mind easier to grease, find the nipple on the tractor end, job done, struggle to find the nipple on the machine end, found it, just get the grease gun end on it then the nipple twists! Feck, what size is it? 8.5mm? Stupid size, move it back with your pen knife and try again, after 5 attempts you get it connected, grease gun runs out/air locks, while I'm at it I will grease the tube since its fallen apart, grease everywhere, putting it back together seems like trying to hoss it into a bird when it's floppy, you break into a sweat but it's back together, back on the tractor, covered in mud grease and sweat.

two men! what luxury on the subject of grease we found the cheap stuff was no use when the power harrow pto got hot and joint went caput used the blue stuff since no problemo

No luxury at all, with 6 men at silage it's a lot easier and quicker when two help one another to grease up.

no but I have counted up over 120 nipples to be done at a time .

Now that is the future , and given the cost of machinery it would be pittance to do , little things like that can swing your decision between brands

I,ve generally it is not the quality of the grease but more the lack of it that causes me problems!!
