Producing a renewable energy source on the farm site - mobile pelletising technology

Hi members,

White Horse Energy is working with UK farmers to explore the practical and commercial benefits of bringing mobile pellet plants to British farms, to produce an energy source from crop residues, miscanthus and other woody energy crops. We are working to bring a high return to farmers producing this energy source, compared to alternative uses.

Help White Horse Energy to drive this biomass revolution, by allowing us to understand your needs by completing our short survey: https://whitehorseenergy.typeform.com/farmers-survey

The research is part of the Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Biomass Feedback Innovation Programme, part of a broader goal towards the UK’s path to ‘Net Zero’, a challenge set to reduce net CO2 emissions to zero by 2050.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our Project Lead: [email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you!

tried comleting it on my phone the other night it was painful and gave up.
Hi there,

We are sorry to hear there were issues in completing our survey using your phone, we would be delighted to hear your thoughts and encourage instead trying on the desktop version.

For other members looking to complete our survey, this should still work well for most users to complete online using their mobiles.

Thanks for your support!

Check out the krone premos 5000 and its price
Ouch
I do think that once we are released from the constraints of RHI burning rules (or we get the emissions test certificate) then burning these straw pellets might make sense, instead of cutting down acres and acres of trees.
I just think that pelleting in the field might be slow and the straw may not be dry enough every summer.
Not sure the price of the machine (bet it's a fortune) and it needs 350 - 500hp tractor.
Anyone know if a contractor in the midlands has one?

Once you’ve done the questionnaire you find that they want farmers with access to 10000 tons + of straw residue etc.

At the 5 tons an hour of processing capacity they have in the field that would make for a very long and painful harvest!
So am I right in thinking a decent crop of wheat straw would be about 2t to the acre? So to clear the field for cultivations, it would be doing about 2.5 acres per hour?
If that's about right, probably have to bale a load of it and pellet it in winter. Which means more added cost and storage problems etc.
But I kind of like the idea, but the practical side of doing it, looks very lengthy.

If you want to play at pelleting straw I have a pelleting machine here you can try. Personally from experience its easier making briquettes using straw. I have considered a mobile pelleting and briquette service as I have both pellet and briqutte machines but unlike wood there are very few stoves approved for burning straw pellets.
