Profiteering

Why is it that suppliers of ATV/Quad implements/accessories seem to think we've all just crawled out from under a stone.
I've just been quoted £2490 (ex VAT) for a 750L electric tipping trailer whose material cost on a volume production has got to be a fraction of that. There's profit and profiteering in my book and that's the latter. You look at what you can get if you have a tractor and tipping trailers are a fraction of that and substantially larger
I know the answer is 'coz they can' but that's more than the quad cost.
Grrrr
Rant over but it does p me off greatly as I get older and struggle to do things that I'm getting ripped off for it. How about dropping the price and selling more! Still bank the same amount of money.

I watched something like that go in a farm sale a few weeks ago for about 200 quid

These sort of things are in the expensive gardening line of items , normally sold to some nouveau riche newcomers, to the country scene. They are a must have for picking up the poo droppings etc.
The quad dealers have to make there money somewhere.

My son needed a bigger van for his business. He was quoted 20k for a new van and offered 4k p/x for his old van (a three yr old Kangoo) so 16k to change. I happened to ask out of curiosity how much the van would be for a straight deal, the salesman tapped on his calculator for a few minutes and came up with a figure of 16k so basically he was taking the old van back for free. Robbing barsteward. Needless to say we didn't p/x the old van, still using it as a runabout actually. :)

I understand your point, but having the trade in owing nothing is a great way to do business, no shame in that. Most Ag dealers yards are full over over valued kit going nowhere. Nearly always do better doing a straight deal.

May well be good business for the dealer but no good for the customer. I'm sure the majority of customers wouldn't think / bother to ask for a straight deal price though. No wonder car dealers hate dealing with farmers. ;)

Wasn't he basically saying, the van is worth very little but I don't want to belittle the customer by oferring him 500 quid for it, so instead I'll play with the figures and make it worth 4 grand.
Happens all the time in agricultural sales.

No the van was worth 4k. It was three yrs old with only 40k on the clock and no dents or mechanical defects. He was just taking the pee.

Basic ride on lawnmower for £12,000, not that I'm buying.

Many things seem to be silly money now.

Really have to be careful and shop around.

It particularly annoys me that some suppliers who we have dealt with for years now seem to "try it on" giving us a quote that is in some cases 80% dearer than the norm, then they just hope we either won't notice or won't bother getting a comparison. Getting a bit tired of it. Fodder beet seed being a case in point. £100 a pack as against £60 for exactly the same product elsewhere. New staff seem to think it's clever to rip off old customers. Won't look so clever when I'm buying everything off the net.
