Propyzamide and OSR

Anyone else experienced poor BG control from Propyz in osr this year. Mine is very disappointing, considering how far removed from a BLW blackgrass is ! Another nail in the coffin for rape here I fear.

More and more growers I speak to are saying how difficult it is to control black-grass in rape. Disappointing considering it used to be the cleaning crop, what with no resistance to propyzamide or carbetamide.

Done a fantastic job. Sprayed early December. Rape drilled low disturbance with Metcalfe tines. But the fields in question haven’t had rape on since 2012. But I would also say apart from the spring onion affect. The plants looked healthy until 3 weeks ago. Now there dead.

I have inspected several fields now, probably total around 900 hectares. Excellent control in the majority - and all these had sequence of Clethodim sometime in late October through November with propyzamide applied early / mid December. A few fields did not receive the clethodim and the control at moment is not total with plants looking poorly (bulbed base) but not dead. I consider the sequence is important factor.

Yes, agronomist thinks, with hindsight we should have hit it with centurion first. The propyz was applied late nov/early dec, maybe still a bit too warm then, or too much rain during late December? Having said that, control in the beans pre em has been good, but they were ploughed in, so that might have some bearing

Same here, volunteer cereals that looked strong 2 weeks ago have died. I’m guessing a rapid uptake of propyzamide during the warm spell was enough to finish them off, it’s actually quite impressive.

I learnt the hard way a few years ago, leaving bg unchecked till kerb time in December is a fools game, hit it with centium late October and the kerb will finish it off.missed a field out last year as didn’t think there was enough bg to warrant spraying with c max and it was the only field that had bg in come harvest

Agreed c-max followed by kerb the way forward. Basically taking out two flushes. If you don’t control the first one your on the back foot.

Bit harsh, calling me a fool !
I certainly won’t be leaving it next year ! Seriously, it’s very helpful, what you say, I really don’t want to lose rape as a break if I don’t have to ..

It’s the main thing, getting kerb on as late as you dare is key and why applying c max in October as a holding spray seems to work

Tends to be a December job here ...... and our agronomist usually thinks that too soon ! Dare not risk Jan in case weather prevents getting it on

It’s done a good job here from what I’ve seen this time

Don’t blackgrass guys have to use Astro kerb ?

Yes we have to use astro kerb but it’s the only two chemicals that the rape has had up till now

Kerb has done an excellent job here again
It needs several factors to work well

  • Shallow / low disturbance establishment to keep the bg near the surface and shallow rooted
  • Earlier planting’s need to have Clethodim sequenced first
  • If this doesn’t happen then Crawler needs to be sequenced, but only if the bg is large and tillered
  • Do not apply too early !! Normally a December job here, heavier land drives the fear of not getting it applied but to the detrement of control
