Pros and cons of hydraulic tail gates on grain trailers?

I will never walk underneath a hydraulic door no matter what. If it failed it could be fatal, let alone someone closing the door. That said, I'd always take the key out of the tractor too.

That advice should apply to all hydraulics, it’s not just ladders you shouldn’t walk under.

I've only ever used trailers that have hydraulic back doors but they would be locked shut by a manual latch to stop grain pushing the door open unexpectedly. Does mean getting in and out a bit more but no worries.

I've always liked the lorry back doors that lift the door slightly to raise it out of a manual locking groove.

There are some trailers with that kind of system now. I think Rolland use it.

It would be useful if hydraulic tailgates on silage trailers were connected through a shearpin type setup so if someone tried to tip them up without fully opening the back door and it touched the silage it wouldn't bend anything.

Most tipper lorries are like this now - it's very clever.

I'm surprised more farm trailers aren't likewise.

Neighbour had (I think he may still have it) a triffit 10ton with a manual auto back door if you see what I mean, no rams just worked on bars bit like some older silage trailers. He got on well with it.

Our stewarts and Western all have to lift the door a bit before it opens, the Western won't open the door unless the body is raised as well.

NC I hire is like that as well.

Of course before hydraulic tail gates no one ever forgot to close or lock them

It would make it easier if you had a front window in the trailer. You could see right through and out the back.....because your load of grain would already be on the floor!

Don't most newer trailers need to be tipped up a bit before the door will work.
Our last one has anyway.

Which has it's own issues as my neighbour when he was half full of grain with the door not shut properly, then he had to tip it up to get the door to shut.

Yes, but literally only a fraction. I can lift my Baileys to get just the slightest amount of movement and then the rear door will open or shut.

We have 2 main grain trailers, one with hydraulic door and one without. I prefer the hydraulic door because you can heap the grain up higher, I find the swinging door drags the heap forwards as you lower the trailer and drive forwards. Our hyd door trailer has manual locks on the back to prevent any accidental tipping so get out of the tractor either way. Also hydraulic is more versatile-we regularly deliver flat 8s of bales in that trailer, just lift the door up and load the bales in. Safety wise, if you don’t go under the hydraulic door and work safely it’s no more dangerous than a swinging door

Yes, swinging door, every time you see on you get a phantom pain in your fingers....

Our Broughan has a bold you can adjust to alter how much it has to be tipped for the door to work.
