Prostate cancer

Most blokes, me included, tend to put things like that off.

Don`t.

Make the appointment.... 5 minutes of minor embarrassment or an extra 20+ years living..... no brainer as they say.
Mine's booked...

Mrs Danllan says I have the same look the dogs get when they realise they are at the vet's. And she had offered to hold my hand during... there is a very dark side to her sense of humour sometimes.

Dr.told me when he checked it year or so ago if that was swollen you would have shot off the bed when he did it ?
Also a good sex life or toss helps too he said ????
Makes sense, left idle organs and glands like the prostate must have fluids that just sit there, going stagnant then eventually toxic. Keep it flushed and active and it should stay healthy?

If that is the case and there isn't a higher incidence of PC among Catholic priests, they must be breaking their vows... :sneaky:.

They defo say regular ejaculation helps stave off prostate cancer.
So when the Mrs says"not tonight dear, I've a headache". Just remind her that she's putting you at risk ;)
And they will forget all about the headache soon enough anyway...... :D

Think most men are the same with the whole leaving until it's to late thing. I've had a dull ache and a lump for nearly 6 years now that I have left unchecked, until recently.
It took the diagnosis of a close friend having testicular cancer before I pulled my finger out and got examined, even having two children to raise I managed to put it off for that long, god knows why.
Luckily all clear for me.
For me, the fear of being told the worse was what put me off going for so long I think.

The blood test for PSA (whatever that is) used to be recommended every six months for men 'over a certain age'. I gather it is pretty unreliable, just gives an indication that the patient might have prostate problems. They don't bother doing one for me any more as apparently odds are that I will be struck down by something else before prostate cancer gets me! Cheerful thought, isn't it? Forwad planning against potential bed blockers? Well, they've got it wrong because I'm not going until I've run out of money and credit!

Best to die in debt, means you've made a profit.

Saw this thread a while ago while looking at the bad-back one, and now I've something to add...

Mrs Danllan's father had a scare with PC a few years ago and she lost a most beloved aunt and a grandmother to breast cancer so she is rather sensitive to the subject as a whole.

I've had a bad back for a while - I am certain from pulling haylage loose in a ring feeder - and have recently got up in the night to use the toilet a few of times. With the boss putting 2 and 2 together she is now ordering me to see the GP...

I think @Shutesy is quite right in saying that most of us will have some symptoms but, having spoken to a friend who is a Doc, it would seem that 'better safe than sorry' is the way forward in this. Probably nothing, but from a bit of muscle strain and drinking too late in the evening (usually tea!), between them Mrs Danllan and said friend have now got me thinking. I'm hoping the 'test' won't be worse than the old Army medicals .

Maybe we are all getting to a 'certain age', but the incidence of cancer locally is alarming.

In memory of a local middle aged farmer who died this month from cancer, all I'll say is if your not right get yourself checked out sooner than later. I know that some of his close friends and neighbours are on this forum, so out of respect I'll leave it there.

It eventually got my Dad.

I am alot more aware as a result - not really much to add to what has been said above, don't put it off.
Our GP said if all men lived to 90 then most all of us would have experienced some type of prostate issue, in Dad's case the first he knew was when he was bursting but simply couldn't pee more than a few drops.
Catheter and then removal after the biopsy showed it was malignant, and had a good decade before his PSA began to go up again, and then had estrogen? injections every six months (basically chemical castration, as I understand it?)

Unfortunately he eventually succumbed as it had spread into the base of his spine, but 15 years of extra life - the saddest part was that he didn't get the routine checks that us 'doctor dodgers' don't make a routine :( which, likely, would have allowed him to still be here today

So there is a lesson in all that, get it done!!

Well, I can think of more pleasant ways to spend an afternoon, but am mightily relieved it's over and done with and, pending blood test results, all is clear. :)

Two things I am happy to share with anyone contemplating such an examination:

1) it is nowhere near as unpleasant as the Army medicals of the 1980s, because...

2) there is now time for lubricant :joyful:

Joking apart, things in life are rarely as good or as bad as we anticipate and, as @Dry Rot wrote, the examination is nothing to be worried about. I've been in potentially fatal situations a few times over the years and I'm not in the least scared of being dead. But this time I had Mrs Danllan and my children... and the thought of not seeing them grow up, well, I can't think of anything more sad or horrible than that.

The moral is gents, if you have a doubt, get a check up - if you think it can wait, hmm, just take a squint at your loved ones and think about them never being able to see you again. Many thanks to all who have posted, if anyone wants to chat about this subject away from the public eye, send me a PM. (y)

Can you test yourself periodically for PC without being a contortionist?
What would you be looking for, hard or soft boiled egg? Uneven surface?
Any Docs on this forum?
Have I got the bottle to try it though, mmm?

Go to the sixth post from the start of this thread. Simply score your symptoms. If you get a bad score, go and see your doc asap. It's as simple as that. He/she will do the necessary.

And if you've got a bad score, don't panic. It is probably just an enlarged prostate, a minor problem that affects the majority of men over 60 that involves a small surgical procedure and an over night stay in hospital. In the USA, it's a walk in, walk out operation done in a few hours.

Ye gods! What a load of whimps! And I am the biggest coward ever.

The doc will have finished your 'examination' in about the same time it takes to read this sentence.

I guess, but don't know, that you would either have to be extraordinarily perceptive or have had professional training to make a safe diagnosis; although, if doing it yourself, you would obviously be able spend as long as you wanted reaching a conclusion...

In honesty, I didn't really have chance to realise the finger had entered before they declared all was good and were pulling the glove off again,

Now if you're worried about a sore arse, go have a haemorrhoidectomy, that's proper pain inducing stuff.

My doc said it should be about 30cc and smooth, mine was only picked up as slightly enlarged after having a CT scan following an accident in the US. If I'd had the accident in the UK it would have been unlikely that they would have given me a scan.

Having just seen there is a Full Monty coming on TV 'live' !!! Just wanted to bring this back up.
I've had few issues for a while and after reading on here and a thick ear from my OH ( she did remind me woman have to get smear test and they aren't pleasant ) .
I went to get checked [emoji54] honestly it's not pleasant lying with your pants down in front of the Doctor, but by the time I'd remembered to remind him to take his rings off !!! It was all over. Not difficult or painful and over before you realise what's happened [emoji6]
So I would urge everyone to go and keep a eye on your health," those jobs can wait till tomorrow , get checked, so you can be there tomorrow "

Like everything in life the more often you do it the better you get.
So if you can persuade 50 of your mates to let you try and get the diagnosis right then you can then check yourself in the future. Bit like doing some wine tasting then checking the label to see how close you were.

I thought that was the bottle you were referring to.

A sudden turn and could end up with a broken finger, if not a broken jaw!!
