Prostate cancer

Several folks will want to feed your friendly stock if the feed is near. Get yourself scoped before the cancer gets root. TURBT excises the growth and you recover.

A good time of year to improve your odds of survival by getting your blood tested for PSA count.

Ask your GP to test if you are over 50 or visit a local testing event listed on the link above.

You can even get a home test kit now !

I have recently learned a bit about prostate cancer. It is not uncommon in older men to find they have an enlarged prostate. A great many of these men will go on to lead full and long lives never experiencing any trouble with it. Some may require medication to manage the condition. In some ways this is analogous to breast cancer in older women- a great number of women will live long lives never having their life nor quality of life curtailed by breast cancer. In some cases both men and women will not be aware that they have these cancers and will in fact die of old age or some other totally unrelated complaint.

However, early detection of these things is extremely useful and these things can be managed often very successfully as they are the most well understood of all things starting with the big C. Ask your doctor plenty of questions.

My GP commented that if we all lived to 100 then nearly all men would be experiencing some type of issue with an enlarged prostate.
Luckily if it does get to the point of C then it is quite a specific one to test for, and treat

I’ve just booked a test for a week on Sunday. Thanks for the link @sodbuster2. Never would have done it otherwise.(y) My wife is in a state of shock! She can’t believe I’ve done this. Very pleased.

Just be aware that the PSA is not that diagnostic in itself, like many things in human medicine, it's not as simple as that.

It is quite complicated. All men will get an enlarged prostate. A number will progress to cancer but if it is localised to the prostate then most will die of something else. In those lower risk men radical surgery only makes a slight difference to life expectancy against the potential complications of treatment.
The good news is that for most men they don't have to rush into a decision.

Last I read anything on this matter the evidence wasn't that strong for surgery vs radiotherapy but it's probably changing all the time. It's such a well researched area that I would not be in the least surprised if they found a complete cure for it in the near future.

Listening to BBC radio 4 a few days ago highlighted the fact that GP surgeries are run as a business and sadly that means that if money is to be saved then that's what happens. I overheard a conversation in a nearby corridor between a consultant who had just visited my ward and the group of students who were being taught by him which confirmed that it is less economic to operate on those advancing in years, whilst more cost effective treatment is available....hardly working in the patients best interest!
Carrying out a DRE is a lot quicker and cheaper and that's the path they often choose...I was lucky as dad had an enlarged prostate which my GP acknowledged and duly carried out the PSA test for which I will be eternally grateful ! Our esteemed news presenter Bill Turnbull recently lost the fight after 5yrs and he made the point that not being tested annually was one of his biggest regrets....

Don't get me started! If I had my way I'd have all men over 30 in for an annual physical (including the DRE), bloods, examinations etc, the works but you lot would complain like fudge. The statistics tell us that men don't fare as well as women in many metrics simply because men are more reluctant to engage in screenings or present to healthcare in general. I'd make it cost a fair chunk but health insurers would discount you for attending so you'd be no worse off.

Do the private firms testing then send results back to your GP to go on your medical record.
The NHS automatically does I guess?
My private medical every year doesn't. That is my private info.
Going back to Groundswell a few years ago a speaker who was a doctor said that they did a survey in USA in that every 50yr old man killed in a car crash had his prostate analysed. 70% had at least a trace of prostate cancer. the 30% healthiest had a higher Zinc content. Careful on the supplements boys as if you are a fish eater you will find if you take too much you wake up in the night with your skin crawling like you have fleas.
Also as stated in this string earlier due to Danish work I drink pomegranate juice every morning first thing from the fridge. Feel it go all the way to the seat of the action. Also occasionally take a Cranberry tablet that works for a friend.

Why wouldn't you want to give your GP that information?
Maybe because they could do most of the important stuff for free and ignore all the private extras you don't need.
Mr Breakthru, thank you for telling us you smoke, drank 40 units a week, weighed 122kg, were getting deaf and had painful hips and knees. Instead of coming back when you had addressed these poor lifestyle choices we were delighted to test your hearing, consult our nutritionist, perform lung function tests, xray your over-loaded joints and confirm your noise-induced hearing.
Of note, your serum magnesium and zinc levels were borderline low so perhaps you should consult your GP to discuss this further.

KERCHIIING!

Lots of wealthy people engage the services of a private GP or similar services. The reason being that they don't want the information being disclosed to organisations like insurance companies (or their employer), for example.

It wouldn't be disclosed to anyone without permission. If they want to hide things then they are wasting their premiums when they refuse to pay out

Interestingly my only problem was dehydration, apparently drinking 2 to 3 litres of tea and half a gallon a day of lager or beer with twigs doesn't hydrate you as they are both diuretics. Have learnt with great difficulty to drink water every day. A gallon of tea or beer is a dawdle half a litre to a litre of water is very difficult in contrast.
My metabolic age is 51 which is way less than reality. Due another medical December so will see the results then.

How did they work out you were dehydrated? Half gallon of beer daily and same of tea takes a bit of peeing out.
