Prostate cancer

Yep, had all the tests done recently (when I had my Kidney Stone exploritory checks) - as some of the symptoms are similar when you have a stone blocking your tubes.

It is a fairly quick and painless test, finger up the Yo Yo and a blood test - and it can save your life (y)

Don't be a "Man" and f**k yourself up through pride - get the tests done, you will be far happier, as ignorance is not bliss..

Oh and I'm 47....

It is all quite complicated as survival rates for some men are just as good with no treatment. If you have new symptoms or a family history then get checked.

Dad had it for about 15 years, but lived to be 86yrs old without any invasive surgery. Worst thing was the last couple of years having to deal with a cathurter and the bags.
I've had it, picked up by a random blood test in 2013.... 37 doses of radiotherapy and then a hormone jab for 3 years after. PSA is now undetectable. I had no classic symptoms, ie getting up to pee in night etc but mri scan picked it up, then biopsy and radio. Prostate cancer will easily spread to the pelvis and other bones then it becomes more serious. Many elderly men die with it not from it. If in doubt get checked out !!

Had a blood test this morning funnily enough, after getting concerned by the number of times I need a pee. Inintial examination was ok.
Have a farmer friend of a similar age going for a biopsy after bloods revealed a rise in his PSA, even though again , no sign of enlarged prostrate .
Glad your ok now.

Thanks for that silverfox, no side effects from the radio but hormone treatment is not very pleasant....a small price to pay imo.

Just been diagnosed with it a month ago. in june i went on a stag night for a friends son, after a long nights drinking i got home and couldnt pee. Went to a&e and had a catheter put in for a week. doc there did finger test and couldnt feel anything wrong other than enlarged prostate. Went to see my own gp day after and they did psa blood test. Week later got letter from hospital to see urologist, got finger test again and again couldnt feel anything wrong other than enlarged prostate. another blood test and psa was still higher so got sent for mri scan. Results came back and still nothing showing but specialist said they would have another closer look!. Next thing i got an appointment for a biopsy where i was told there was a couple of bits they wanted to look closer at. Went to get results for biopsy to be told i had prostate cancer but it was at a very very early stage. Waiting now for an appointment with oncologist to see about treatment which is either surgery to remove prostate or hormone treatment for 3 month then radiotherapy for 4week. What a choice!.
Would now recommend anybody to go and get a psa blood test done

Without wishing to influence you or your urologist/oncologist I bave a friend who had his removed and is suffering with incontinence etc etc and 'will never be a man again'. The urologist I saw steered me down the radio and hormone route for which I shall be forever grateful. Just saying.....:(

Thanks for that. my first thoughts on diagnosis was to get it removed but after speaking to the cancer nurse and urologist who both spoke about incontinance and the other problems i am more thinking of going on the radiotherapy - hormone treatment. Will have to learn how to cope with the hot flushes!! Have a friend a few years older than me and he had the same diagnosis 3 yr ago and he went on hormone, radiotherapy and he`s now fine.

Is there a recommended age for this type of check up then?
I'm in my early thirties and never really thought much about it, but I can slowly feel my youth disappearing so might need to start taking care!

It`s recommended to start testing from 50yr old. I dont think many will have it done though until waterworks really slow down as i did foolishly or other problems appear. I`m 61 and thought slowing waterworks was just one of the things that can happen to you as you got older and never thought about the cancer side of it but now i know different. Very luckily mine has been caught at a very early stage, but it could so easily have been different. Anybody over 50 go and get yourselves checked out.
