PTO problem on MF 6265

I’ve had an intermittent fault for some time but it’s getting worse. The problem is on a 2000 MF6265 with regards to engaging the pto. The switch is a fairly big yellow twist handle. Although the switch appears to rotate ok the pto doesn’t engage and start up, but something in the switch works as the dashboard light comes on blinking which suggests it knows the switch is in the engaged position but the pto isn’t working.
Does anyone know whether this is likely to be a faulty switch or is there a cable or something that actually puts the pto in gear? It does sometimes work after stopping and restarting the tractor with more revs when engaging the switch, so could it be that the oil has to be warmer? I’m not sure how these pto clutches work.

When the pto does work, does the speed display show ok? The speed sensor is behind the left hand lift ram and may have a faulty wire or even the sensor itself.
Have you a pto stop button on the side of the left hand tail light? If so,it could be faulty or if you remove the light unit, you could check the wiring and plug for the switch. If there, unplug the switch and try the pto.
Pto solenoid could be playing up too...

When it does work the speed is generally shown ok although it does occasionally flash up weird speeds. No there isn’t a pto stop on the mudguard of this model.

Possibly a PTO solenoid control valve issue. The valves can stick if a tiny bit of crud gets in there. First test whether voltage stops and starts according to cab switch position at the solenoid. If so, remove the valve and inspect. I may, with a bit of luck only require a bit of a clean. The solenoid valve can result in an intermittent fault, in case you were wondering. You may find that a new replacement has a gauze oil filter fitted where the old type will almost certainly not have one.

If there is no current at the solenoid, it is a wiring fault in all probability, which may be as simple as a poor earth or corroded connector somewhere.

Where is the solenoid? Is it just under the internal panel where the pto knob is?

Even if no pto switch is on the outside wing the loom will be there with a bridge wire, the connectors can corrode so is one place to check. If it’s got 540 and 1000 or eco pto lever in cab they will both have a position switch to tell the dash it’s in gear and which speed to calculate. These can play up, stick or even not pushed in fully by the lever.
