At some point I think there were two things that perpetuated this nonsense. There were some issues with early 3000 series MF where the bearing specification on the PTO final drive was not up to par. It was one of the first to offer 750 PTO speed [not THE first though]. There was that.

I'm glad that you have cleared that up because I've been slightly worried when using 540E on a mower.

My dad bought a new IH 414 in 1961 with a 2 speed PTO,540 and 750, there was a lever just past your right foot to change speeds. I bought a 1963 Super Major and that had 540 at only 1500rpm and as you say it hadn't enough power, it should have been at least 1750rpm.
