I was chatting to a few mates who are non farmers and they had came up with an idea about buying animals and mincing the whole lot (bones and all) to create a food for working dogs. I told them about price for lamb/mutton/ and beef to buy in markets but they were asking about Horses.but i didnt know what the price of a horse would be for meet? Ie an old one or 6 months old. And what would the legalities be of it?
I thought they were crazy at first but the more we drunk the more it made sense

Not sure about the business idea but did hear a piece on the radio earlier about horses being abandoned and them having no value now as they aren't going into the food chain any more.

I think a lot of dog food is made out of condemned meat anyway and bought for next to nothing.
I expect by the time you have rounded the horses up and shot them etc, the costs will start to mount up.

No, Pet food comes from carcases which has been passed fit for human consumption, but not necessarily parts which are normally consumed.

It is regulated as highly as food for human consumption is, and by FSA

The meat man gives £50 across the board for all ponies / horses at my local sales. You would be surprised at some of the quality horses and foals that end up there. They get placed in holding stables (about 3 or 4 in each) and then collected in the 'knacker wagon!' Horse / Pony prices seem to be reducing significantly year on year, top quality stock will always make top dollar but anything mediocre or with a 'story' struggles to sell. Far far too much breeding by people who haven't got a bloody clue what they're doing. The sale down at Builth, Welsh pony foals at £40 to £80 a piece as many as you want. It costs far more than that to wean, microchip, passport and then you've the auction fees. Bloody idiots.

Spot on. It is a common misconception that 'meat and animal derivatives' are things like beaks and fish scales where in fact it will be trimmings, hearts and lungs.

I think it would be good to find a use for horse meat as it would underwrite the value of every animal which would hopefully massively reduce neglect.

The reality is thought that in this country people have a big problem with horse meat and I can't see many people buying any food, human or animal, that openly declares it on the label.
