Any recommendations for using 240v to pump river water to a number of cattle troughs? - I will need the pump and a pressure switch, anything else?

Unfortunately not, barely any fall in the river level, certainly not enough to build up the necessary headWould a ram pump work for you

Collected my pump and pressure vessel from Trevor yesterday - what a lovely chap. Thank you very much for the recommendation.Trevor Fuller, at Fuller water systems will be able to help you with a simple system. He is basedjust down the road from me and sells a few systems to gardeners Etc.
a little Dab pump with pressure switch, 3-4 metres of hose with a non return strainer foot and a funny filter thingy. Never worked out how it works, but it does and needs cleaning occasionally.

I am planning the solar pump to a header tank but I only need a couple of metres of head and 50 m o horizontal, but no 240 v.
Not done yet,as i wouldn't need it this year anyhow but still interested.Have you sourced a solar system yet, there is an Irish lad that has a packaged system but quite expensive.
