Pumping Sheeps water to tanks.

Have taken on some more ground for sheep but no water supply, there is a river running along the bottom of the block of land , is it ok for sheep to drink river water if I pump it to the water tanks

As long as the river is not downstream of a sewage treatment plant - I found that one out myself.

It is possible I believe to get a solar powered pump that will fill the tank automatically although I would have a header tank to directly supply the trough.

I used pasture pump with cattle but sheep wouldn't be strong enough to use it and I had issues with the pipe getting blocked on the suction filter side with weed and silt and narrowly avoided a crisis by finding this out.

I cart water in a bowser now, it is easier than worrying about the pump every day. Sheep would be less critical though.

What did you find out ? We are downstream and sheep drink from the river. Tempted to pump it but see the downsides

I never looked into it any more, what small amount my sheep drink from the river doesn't damage the banks - in fact it helps keep some reeds and rushes down so that waterfowl can walk out and graze (looking forward to a subsidy for that).

Do you think it would be safe to pump into say a10000 l tank and then use for spraying or feeding cattle off possibly. Or not worth the hassle ?

Might need some sort of abstraction licence?

Not worth me bothering, got several 10 K litre tanks very full of rain water from roofs
I think you can pump a fair bit without an abstraction licence. It was more to do with the sewage plant about a mile upstream. Most of the time it’s ok but we all know what they get up to at times.
