Pumpkins

Long-time lurker, first time poster. Anyone here have any experience growing pumpkins? Just can't, in spite of efforts, get the stale seedbed right. Probably because I transplant out and typically as soon as weather heats up leaving the weeds no time to flush properly first.

I read online about centurion max. Is banded spray my only option? Thanks in advance.

Managed to track some of that down now. Will have it in couple of days. Thanks a million guys. My sanity and back and pumpkins are appreciative.

Very hard to get any good advice here on any veg growing bar spuds. It's all cereals and grass in my area. Have had some bad advice before that nearly destroyed the whole crop.

This is literally life changing.

Biodegradable mulch? http://www.agralan-growers.co.uk/biodegradable-mulch-251-p.asp

Weeds along edge can be a problem - directed glyphosate.
In my opinion you should never use directed glyphosate in such situations. If you are going to direct anything then use diquat or possibly a contact called Shark (or mix the two) and learn to live with any drift damage. A pumpkin or any other small young plant of this nature is very unlikely to live with any drift if you use glyphosate.

I knew some one that used to put plastic pots over young growing plants, both on courgettes and pumpkins. Then spray with glyphosate, then used to hoe around the plants if necessary. A bit labour intensive but very effective (y)

I have done similar myself many times but not with glyphosate.
If you use glyphosate as part of the process of preparing the ground for pumpkins (or anything else for that matter) you will not have any perennial weeds of a size that diquat will not control. It doesn't make sense to use glyphosate because of the risks no matter how many pots or guarded sprayer you use.

It makes no odds to me what you use, I just can't see a situation where it was needed and it is very likely to go tits up.

You also have Kerb Flo (propyzamide) and Gamit (clomazone) as herbicide options in cucurbits. Both applied after transplanting, but work best if you have some moisture around at time of application.

Went with the flexidor but it may have been too late as I was on the honeymoon the day after planting for a fortnight.

Going with kerb flo in the knapsack inbetween rows at the minute as its starting to get dirty. Chickweed, dead nettle, groundsel grass and some Shepard's purse. Mainly chickweed. Pumpkins starting to flower and some thinking about vining. Hopefully have weeds sorted before the winter barley starts ripening!
