Of course it would use less fuel, its has 24HP less than the 4600, different size of tractor. Must have been some dogs of fords about at that time for some people to hate them as much.
As for mine, I wouldent be without it, 22 years and over 10000 hrs on one clutch, and a few front king pins, had a loader on for 14 years, and done all the jobs my 7610 has done, albeit a bit slower.
As for the op, I would imagine all the dogs have gone for export by now, choose carefully and you can get a good one.

is a 4600 71hp? as much as i would have a massey over a ford any day theres nothing wrong with a 4000

i will say the 3 pot ford is probably the roughest running engine ever made by anyone

94 sounds nice enough with a straight pipe and a turbo..
Feck all 94 series Case were sold over here ,1394's were shite and 1594's , well they couldn't even sell them cause they were that guttless:asshat:. The only good thing about the 94 series Case 's, it made it easy for the local Fiat dealer to sell tractors:LOL::LOL::LOL:.As for 3 cylinder Fords , you must be doing something wrong , should start first turn of the key, even my 3000 starts first turn of the key below 0 celsius. As fer realiabilty, had no problems there for over 40 years, your DB's would be more of a liability:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:.

I do apologise always thought the 135 was only about 40 hp, but its still a smaller tractor than the 4000.:p
To bring us back from the ford/massey bashing, I think any classic tractor in gwo would be suitable for the task of powering the firewood prosesor, see whats available localy, and just buy the best you can afford.

Nebraska test data put the MF 135 at 37.82 hp at rated engine speed (NTT 895) at the PTO, and around 52.65hp for the 201 Ford 4000 (NTT 994) and 4600. And for the MF 165, 52.42 hp (NTT 896)

we must have had the only bad starting 4600 in the entire world then, (well i say we, more my uncle)

wasnt uncommon to see a bucket of oily rags being burned under the sump on a cold morning to persuade it to fire, by this time grandfather had started the 990, buggered off down the field and left him in the yard.

You must have done! Mine starts first time every time with no hesitation in any weather! Never ever give it heat, its a lovely little tractor with a brilliant engine, cant fault it! Never uses a drop of oil and it gets used regularly!

quite honestly the 990 ran rings round it, the 4600 didnt have the weight or grip to be of any use, he had a ransomes 2f, the DB pulled an IH 3f

we put it down to the 4600 having wide 36" rear wheels, where the 990 had narrow 32", it was no contest

we bought a 990 some years ago after masseys for years (we are only a sheep farm) , its not a road tractor but wouldnt sell her , very good on the pto and lifting for her size , everything is v easy to work on and the crossflow engine is very forgiving , now have , 2 , 1494s and one 1394 a 990 and , all good machines for the price , and do just want we want ,

MP thought the 135 was 47hp, noooooooo, the 148 was a massive 47.5 hp and needed thicker half shafts and stronger diff and casings to handle the extra 2hp over the little 135.:D:D:D:D

Thought fergy used the same gearbox and diff housing from 135 to 1080?

not quite, they had many similar internal components though

all made out of steel, not like the engine block in most fords

its the engine noise what puts me off them, even when they ok they sounds as if they havent got any big end bearing shells, its just how they are...nauseating

engine blocks may have been a bit religous but they did start a trend for cheap remanufactured short motors
