hi , have had plans drawn up up for a shed , the purlins for the side sheets have shown on the plans fixed the outside of the leg rather than inside the webbing of the h beam , I also saw a mock shed at turriff show which also had the purlin fitted on the outside of the legs , what is the pros and cons with this purlin placement .

Usually industrial buildings have side rails on the outside of stanchions. Walls are then outside the stanchions

Hi, you wouldn't require as many cleats if fitted to the outside of the rsj as two purlins would bolt onto one cleat.

Depending on the build up of the cladding and if you wanted to line the inside of the purlins it can also give a better finish as the sheets would sit flush all the way along the building.

In livestock buildings, if you have poured walls having the purlins on the outside gives a nice air gap for ventilation in a livestock shed, don't need that if you are using panels on the inside of the leg as the gap is there.
