Went to Moscow and St Petersburg two years ago. The range of dairy products on the Supermarkets was as good if not better than in the UK. Sanctions encouraged self sufficiency and another market closed to EU farmers. Another example of EU politicians screwing up.
We had a group of russians visit scotland in 1989. When they were taken to a supermarket they burst into tears at the sight of all the food with not a queue in sight

This had nothing to do with EU politicians screwing up. The sanctions were put in place when Russia invaded Crimea by force and was the only reprisal made without going to a full blown war.
Yes Russia has been trying to increase self sufficiency for a long time with mixed success, however there are still food shortages and massive corruption. I was in Georgia around 5 years ago and met a group of farmers and was given a loaf of bread as a gift!

The bread is significant!

But they invaded the Crimea because Germany was trying to do a trade deal with the Ukraine, which they were told was out bounds after the war.

Good for mr Durr, while it lasts. Politburo have a name for it: “useful idiots”. Once the business is in an optimal operating mode, people that have built it might fall out of favour... as many Germans, Poles, Finns... have learnt on previous occasions.

Why would the Ukraine need Moscow's permission to do a trade deal with the EU which they have. The fact is that Ukraine actually did a trade deal with Moscow in preference to the EU in 2013, something to do with several billion dollars of "free" money. But from there on Moscow has steadily been trying ring the Ukraine's neck with tariffs, embargoes and invasions.

Do you think America would just sit on its hands if Hawaii voted to leave the union and form a trade alliance with China. I think not, they would be quickly educated in democracy.

The Germans were told pretty clearly the boundary for expansion in the future after the war, and they crossed the line.
